DO NOT put it close to a vegetable garden as they’re invasive and will take ove. Hard as heck to dig out too. Like trying to dig through thick carpet. If you have a good size fence line, that’s the best place. They are a perineal and will come back each year in most places. |

But apparently, I can grow asparagus in a vase! Unjabbed - Take Dayquil or Nyquil if you get the flu |

I can’t call it an “epiphany”, because I’ve always known it. In this world/life experience/simulation, it’s so cut throat. You have to take energy from something else to maintain your own existence. You can’t just “be”. You have to kill and steal. Of course, I’m being dramatic for fun. But think about it - you can’t keep living unless you eat something, thereby destroy it. Why can’t we just be sustained without cannibalizing nearby energy? Riddle me that, Batman. Unjabbed - Take Dayquil or Nyquil if you get the flu |

I’m not vegetarian, I used to be a gourmet cook. And I still like meat (free range chickens and fish). But I’m just pondering this today - you are literally forced to take energy from elsewhere to maintain your existence. Something is off about that. Why can’t I be self maintaining? I dug up some to thin out the patch, for every one I dug up, 50 more sprang up in the original spot. Now when I want to thin, I cut back all of the new stalks of the plant I want to thin for a few seasons. It cuts off the feed to the mother root. |

Some studies say it is a biological ability to detect the smell more than the plant effecting the urine of only some people. I am one that can defiantly detect the overpowering strong smell. I grow and eat a lot of asparagus. Op will be able to get the asparagus to bloom in water, but you will need a root tuber to grow the plant. |

But I didn't get around to it and it started to wilt. Quoting: Bloody Mary I remember from when I lived in civilization, the instructions were to stand it up in the fridge, in water, with some kind of plastic loosely wrapped around the top. But I'm not that fancy anymore so I just found this beautiful, turquoise vase and put the asparagus in it with some water. It's sitting next to my bed. It is so pretty! And it grows so fast. New shoots keep popping out. I don't even know if I want to eat it now. In fact, I want more asparagus plants. I'm leaving now to go shopping. I am trying to grow asparagus too but the climate isn't suitable. What state are you at? |

I have the purple top variety, it is green, but they call it purple due to a little purple hue. I know it grows wild in CA, you might just need to try a kind that does well where you live. It can do well in hot or cold climates depending on the veriety. |

It takes 3 years to establish, before you can really start harvesting. It is perennial for up to 25 years, so that is a definite plus. But on the downside, if you don't happen to have a ton of land, each plant takes up a good amount of space. The fern tops kind of sprawl out a lot. Do not plant if you need to use your smaller land for high productivity. Oh f you have the space, it is a great addition. |

I love it steamed, and then fried with bacon bits ... yum I planted five plants some years back ... you have to wait for the stems to get bigger than a pencil before you harvest - may take up to three years for their roots to establish - but I've been eating from those plants for six years now, and every year there is more ... always make sure you leave at least one stem per plant when you are harvesting ... so you don't kill the roots - and then let that one stem grow - it will get six foot high in the summer ... now I have an entire bed of asparagus - that is the first plant up in my garden ... I aso live in a desert climate ... and it grows fine here even without having to water it ... it's got deep roots need to chop it all down before Spring ... to make room for new growth ... and it will grow for centuries |

If you want to grow asparagus yourselves, it will take 3 years to get a full harvest. Might be a good idea to put it in a raised bed north to south, plant will get 6foot high so makes for a nice privacy screen in summer. |

Very little maintenance and up against a rhubarb bed which is also very old and they are aware of each other's border. For those who don't garden these are 2 of my recommended plants. And yesssssssss they taste so much better then store bought. |
