Knocking on stone seems older than knocking on doors as that is a working theory.
Says earliest known was Amenhotep III striking the doorpost of one of sixteen city gates with his white-headed mace at the temple at Soleb, Nubia, ca. 1360 B.C.
Before that fabric hanging like curtains in doorways.
