In NY you needed a license to have a handgun. (This was before the radical leftists changed it, not sure what the requirements are now, but everything got harder not easier.)

About 10 years ago, a the Journal-News in Westchester County published a list of all license holders and their addresses. A nice map for anyone planning home invasions, where to avoid.

Nothing happened to them. The info was quasi public but there was a gentleman's agreement not to mention it -- until they did.

All seemingly law abiding citizens. Yet, protect and release the ones with stolen weapons. It couldn't get much more stupid.
