Also manually cleaning harvested wheat is one huge pain in the ass lol. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83763149 amen! an acre of food will only last most people a couple of weeks at the most the amount of time, energy and resources that it takes to grow an acre of food is more than most people are willing to put out. 6 months of work for 2 weeks of food? most people WON`T do that. |

Potatoes. Easy to grow. I'm testing grow bags currently, as I'm in town and don't want to dig up my small yard. Just threw in whole potatoes that were sprouting on my counter because cuttings need to be dried before planting to keep mold from forming. I've got 4 bags going. We'll see how many I get. And it's time to get to know your ranching/farming/gardening neighbors. |

Grains are another matter. You can store them for up to 30 years, if they are properly packaged in aluminized mylar and sealed with O2 absorbers. I recommend walton feed in ID. Lead times are probably a month or two out. When you are afraid of losing your life, you have already lost your life. Don't be afraid. |

No holds barred
User ID: 83412272 Mexico 07/02/2022 01:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We are eating last years food. Some stuff is 2 years old (tins etc). Quoting: Sallywinder Last year wasnt a good year for world food production, and china went into the market and bought over half the worlds grain stores. They knew something was coming. This year world food production is collapsing. grain reserves, and grain prices matter, because most poultry, beef and pork is mass produced with grain. It now costs more for the grain to raise an animal. Farmers with animals in feed lots are stopping production as it is costing them more money to grow an animal out, than when they sell it. Next years food depends on what we grow this year. This year we are in deficit. Meat production has collapsed, grain production has collapsed with war in the grain belt of Europe (Ukraine), trade bans on Russian exports, drought in the USA, flooding in Australia. No grain equals no beef, chicken, pork. Only grass fed animals will be for sale, and the prices for that will skyrocket. The rich will eat well, the poor of the west will eat... but the poor of the 3rd world will starve. We wont really feel the results of this years food shortage until late next year. Time for you to make whatever arrangements to secure some sort of better outcome than if you do nothing. There is time to prep. But not much. this |

Haven't gardened in over decade, other than shiitake & oyster mushrooms, and raised beds had turned into small sapling planters. Took most of a week to dig all the roots out and prep soil. Got half my SP rootlings in yesterday and will finish planting tomorrow. 110 days and I'll be able to survive on Biden's domestic Mars.
