Happened today at 1:10pm performance

One person is dead following an explosion during a jet-fueled semitruck pyrotechnic performance Saturday at Battle Creek Executive Airport. Battle Creek, Michigan.

Oh shit it's SHOCKWAVE jet truck.

I've seen that truck quite a few times and have even met the driver.

Shit man. Good people.

So the purpose is to race the jets? I've been to air shows but never saw that performance.

What exactly would have caused that to happen?
 Quoting: nutmeg

The truck is the only jet powered vehicle in that video.

Blown tire. If you watch the first video you can see the rear of the left rear fender disintegrate, and then followed shortly by the front of the left rear fender. The debris from the tires and fender compromised the outer turbine body just after the compressor chamber. Right where compressed air is charged with fuel and ignited. That is the reason for the flames right before he loses control. Three distinct pops. One from the rear tire, then the pyro, then the front rear tire. It's pretty obvious if you watch the first video closely.

It just happened when I posted the news. Details will follow.
They'll probably cancel the entire 3 day show. They always do when this happens. It takes years to plan and one accident cancels everything.

The air show has been cancelled for the rest of the day while emergency crews respond to the scene. The airspace has been closed. Everything is set to return to normal on Sunday.

Re: One dead following 'jet truck' explosion during Battle Creek Field of Flight airshow
The pyro didn't cause the accident. Judging by photos you can find elsewhere, his back left rear tire blew out right when the chutes deployed. The debris from the tire likely ruptured the fuel line and caused the fire. Also likely caused the chutes to fail and the truck slid off the runway and started flipping.

Horrible incident.

I am wondering, too.

Here's an explanation how the "Shockwave Jet Truck" works.

"Shockwave is currently being driven by Chris Darnell, who uses the truck to compete against planes going 300 miles per hour (480 km/h) in a rolling drag race at airshows, often winning."

At least it wasn't a spectator who died.

If your going to drive a Semi-Truck at 300MPH you have to kind of expect to die.

On Shockwave's facebook page....many condolences:

Here's one:
No words. My memories over the coming days will be some beautiful photos I've taken of Shockwave over the years. My heart is shattered beyond words. I've messaged back and forth with Chris many times as I sent him my photos. Always a fan. Rest in peace, Chris. My love and prayers for your family, friends and crew. As a nation, we mourn the loss of a true American treasure.

Posted on the Shockwave Facebook page. Highlights of airshows:

Re: One dead following 'jet truck' explosion during Battle Creek Field of Flight airshow
He had a blowout as his chute was deploying. He was in my town at an airshow just a couple of months ago. I got to get a good look at his truck. He uses super singles on the rear axles instead of traditional duals. Looks like the right rear tire blew, as you can see debris leaving the truck as his drag chute is pulling out the main chute. You can see a fire on the back of the truck right before he starts to drift to the left as he is approaching the pyrotechnic routine. Those super single tread caps are extremely heavy and when they separate from the carcass at that speed they destroy everything in their path. The fire was probably from the lower right jet engine being destroyed by the tread cap, as it is mounted only a few inches away and has very little protection from flying debris.
