Anonymous Coward User ID: 79303194 United States 07/04/2022 01:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't like this news. Quoting: BrainGuy I was about to sell my wife's old Toyota. Maybe I'll about to sell it a lot faster. Like next week. I don't like looking at maximum results in the rear view mirror as they are speeding away from me into the past. Check carvana man Its easy to get an online price quote from them, and long as you tel them the correct mileage and condition, youll get what they offer and itll beat what anyone else does more than likely When they came and picked my car up the dude barely even looked at it, signed a couple papers, and he was gone in 20 minutes Money deposited in my account a day later No way they give you close to what it’s worth and what u can sell it for. Sure they may give you $1500 but you can get 5 k for it even if beat up Its worth checking to see what they will give you I told my story earlier in this thread Dont tell me what they will or wont do. I literally just sold a car to them last week Carvana gave me above blue book value at $18,900 (i bought it brand new 6 years ago for $21,000) The dealer wanted me to trade it in for $14000 I've been playing this buy low and sell high game for the past year. I started with a $8,700 car and just traded up to a $19,000 car. I bought a Prius 2 months ago for $19,000 (it was $21,000 new). Carvana is offering me $24,000 for it. I like the car. It gets 53 mpg in the city. I'm still debating selling it to them. BTW - Carvana owes over 1000 x the cash they have on hand. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 81366458 France 07/04/2022 06:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | New cars are so damn expensive these days, regardless of the shortage, it's hard to imagine used cars crashing to a large degree because folks will still need vehicles. You are right. People will still need vehicles, and with lower income that means used cars. Also new car are shit, EVs suck, and it's too expensive for what it is. In fact used cars are just better. My new car i bought fucking rules Sorry to burst your bubble Which one it is? There is still some good new car, but at what cost? |

User ID: 81363232 United States 07/04/2022 06:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The used car market is on the brink of an auto loan collapse that can shake the entire industry. Quoting: Ultra MAGA Dan I am shocked that more people are not talking about this! We are facing a 2008-ish scenario in the used car market and honestly, it's a disaster waiting to happen. When buyers purchase a car, a vast majority (~85%) are financed. The problem is that, unlike real estate, auto loans are not subject to strict underwriting requirements allowing almost anyone to get one. Buyers with lower credit scores were funnelled into loans with 2x interest! You can see how crazy this is in the latest auto loan consumer reports. - 25 to 50% of the loans were given to customers who might not be able to repay it - Lenders only verified the source of income and employment only 4% of the time If that's not crazy enough, as of now, 5% of Auto Loans are behind payments and nearly half of them are underwater! Just like how the housing market collapsed from the loan crisis in 2008, the same thing is said to be starting to happen in the Auto Loan market. As the supply chain and chip crisis has improved from COVID times, used car prices have dropped for 4 consecutive months & are now down 6.4% since January. This is a nightmare for the banks that have lent money on these cars, whose value is rapidly beginning to fall. Just recently, Equifax reported that 8.5% of subprime borrowers defaulted on their car loans - the second-highest on record! WSJ also found that more subprime borrowers have started missing out on payments as rising inflation made them choose between essentials & auto loans. The reality is that lenders have given buyers unaffordable loans without verifying their financials on car values that cannot be sustained without a chip shortage. It's only a matter of time - eventually, things have to come back to normal. KPMG predicts that used car prices can drop 30% as more supplies hit the market and Ally Financial predicts a 20% drop. The timing is a bit uncertain but it looks like it's going to unravel in the next 12-18 months. https://imgur.com/X06Ej5t From everything that I have researched, my biggest concern is that too many people have locked themselves into auto loans that are more expensive than they can afford. If you liked this analysis, do join my newly launched newsletter to get a recap on my videos and in-depth deep dives like this direct to your inbox! Oh, and its completely free :) [link to threadreaderapp.com (secure)] Here are my thoughts on this: if a bank CHOSE to loan to someone w/o verifying anything and paid an over-inflated price for that vehicle, then that is 100% on the lender. They get to eat that because they made that choice. EVERY decision that we, as people, make is our consequence to deal with. When we make bad decisions, it is our own fault. I don't want to see anymore of this bailout sh*t for banks because they did that. THEY did that. If they hadn't loaned out money for an unnecessarily over-priced vehicle, they wouldn't be stuck with an asset worth far less than they paid for it. Period. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80247695 Canada 07/04/2022 08:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Didnt know this, but i could feel it coming and sold my old car to carvana last week Quoting: 1-2-Follow Low mileage, 6 years old, got $19k for it and it was 21k new, so i basically drove it for 6 years for $2000 Similar thing with me. Bought for 35k sold for 33k 2 years later. The problem wasn't selling, it was finding something to replace it with. I wanted to find a decent 4x4 5-6 years old and couldn't.. The prices were too high on the junk that was available and the the oldest vehicle was only 3-4 years old. The market dried up for anything beyond 5-6 years old vehicles. I think it was a Canada problem because I heard the dealers were buying up whatever they could and selling them for USD to the states.. Which killed the canadian used market imo. Or severely crippled it. With low supply, high demand, prices naturally rose on used vehicles, then covid/supply chain issues hit and it got worse. |

User ID: 83768527 United States 07/04/2022 08:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The used truck market (they say) is really crazy! We needed a decent, used beast to haul hay for our farm. My buddy has an Auto Service Center in town, and is a Used Car Dealer as well. He gets cars from the Auctions. It was MONTHS ago that I axed him to be on the lookout for me. I thought he had forgot. Then, about a month ago, he calls me, and says he found it! 2005 Ford F250 Super Duty w/4WD (a must up here!). Had some miles (and rust) on it, but ran like a top! The book retail was 7K - 9K. We paid $2850 for it. It's terrific! Got a Farm Tag and it's my "new" Farm Truck! So, you really have to search and be disiplined. And, it helps to have a friend in the biz! |
