They were lying was what I was thinking.

The TV was saying that everything was fine and normal.

I was looking at a split trail plume of brownish gray smoke.

man, I sure do remember it. I was working in Palmdale, CA
at a office supply store, we had a small shop in the back room and we were watching it on a small television mounted
on the wall.

I was in disbelief and shock for... maybe an hour or two.

None of us did any work. We all kind of stumbled around,
muttering to each other once in a while.

I was working in a paint & body shop in Stuart FL. Listening to the radio as always when a shuttle was to take lift off. I had lived in Cape Canaveral for a time and got to know some folks ..

I grew up in that era when to watch on black and white television, a rocket to the Moon was unimaginable.

We still had the bay doors open and it was cold. I couldn't get my hands to work. I needed to mask a car for painting. Can't do that with gloves on. It was a very dry cold. Not typical of a tropical environment. The sky, the clearest of Blue.

Live in South Florida. Saw the rocket flume in the sky, then the explosion, and knew instantly no one could survive that. Sad day.

Re: More 'tard stuff.. Anyone one else here eyewitness the Challenger explosion?
I saw it. I was on my way to Okeechobee to do in-home TV service calls for Curtis Mathes. I was listening to the radio and as soon as it launched I pulled over to wait for it to get in view. I was standing outside my service van watching with the radio still on listening to launch control when it happened. At first I thought it was some kind of new SRB separation the way they crossed paths, (from my angle of view anyway) but when the guy on the radio said "we've lost the downlink" I knew it wasn't what I was hoping. Those smoke trails and the cloud of smoke seemed to hang there forever.
There was not a dry eye at any of the homes I went to that day. Very sad.

I was in junior high. They rolled a TV into our home room to watch it live. My home room teacher was a science teacher who actually applied to be the teacher for that flight. It was confusing when it happened because my generation had never experienced a fatality in our space program before.

Watched at home with my baby in my arms

Saw the POOF and smoke trail …

People went POOF !

My heart sank

Those astronauts’ kids were watching

POOF

Tom Brokaw made himself a household word that day … reporting while choking up and fighting tears

Life itself seemed more fragile

Told my baby he couldn’t become an astronaut … just stay on the ground and be an engineer or ground control

they were in the tight pilot capsule that detached from smiethereens of shuttle

they rode it all the way down to sea at high speed

when receoved learned that they activate oxygen

so they were alive all way down

it would have crush them instantly

torsos attached to seats with restraints

when impact would have been 200g

As soon as I was free of the doors and could see. What I saw, was what was televised. The tri splitting of white smoke plumes.

As I remember it, it was too surreal. My mind could not comprehend what was happening. The tainted blue sky with the death of hero's, was what I was witnessing.. thinking.

I remember the competition the year prior, for a civilian to go up in the space shuttle. A teacher won it.
I had a bad feeling about her when I saw she won.
I came hone from school and found out.
I wasn't surprised that it blew up.

I had never heard that the Russians were responsible before now.

my best friend worked at Rockwell in Woodland Hills
building the shuttles. He often complained about
how ad hoc they were being built and predicted a
failure for years. His pet peeve was that the
original engine design was 30% underpowered,
so they'd done a bunch of retrofits to boost
the power
