Re-granulation of Salt - - Does anyone have Any Suggestions?
Hi! like so many of us, I've been prepping a bit. Well, I was checking my "stores" the other day, and realized that, because of the moisture in the air, all of my salt has solidified into one-pound cylinders capable of doing physical harm if dropped upon one's foot.

Does anyone have any Helpful Hints about turning these "blocks" back into usable granulated salt (and keeping them that way)? I tried checking the Net and they just wanted to sell me more salt.

Thanks in advance, and hope you're having a great 4th of July!

If it comes down to it, a hammer to break into chunks, then a mortar and pestle.

Just get a salt grinder. It is just like a pepper grinder.

I bought one when I bought several pounds of Himalayan pink salt.

Because that salt is part of my "stash" and as such needs to be in usable condition for something other than an excellent murder weapon. But thanks for taking the time to answer!

LOL! When I first read your reply, I thought you were saying "meat tenderizer" and thought "But meat tenderizer is probably much more expensive than salt!"

But then I realized that you must have meant one of those little hammers with the bumps on the "business end". You did, didn't you?

I heard that storing salt and white rice together would prevent the salt from clumping. Rice absorbs moisture. Just use a strainer to catch the rice when pouring...

That suggestion seems to have won by general consensus . I will give everyone's suggestions a try and let you know how they turn out.

The results might provide some vital information for people who are trying to gather necessities for times to come.

PS.: Once I have re-granulated the salt, does anyone have any suggestions about keeping it from welding back into a big ol' brick again? Thanks!

THIS.

People who live in areas of high humidity usually put rice in their salt shakers , (mixed in with the salt), to prevent caking. The holes in the lids of the salt shakers allow the salt to flow out, but keep the grains of rice inside.

I guess I would just hammer a chunk off every now and then, rather than degranulating the entire thing. Because it could just harden up again.

Maybe put it inside white fabric before hammering, and then wack away.

Then, as someone said, you can probably mortar and pestle pebbles of it till it is in small pieces like sand.

You can place small pieces inside a salt grinder on the table to get an even finer grind.

You can probably get away with throwing sand-sized granules into things like soup.

Seal it in a metal cannister. Close it up on a very low humidity day or a short heat up in the oven....makes DRY heat. You don't want to seal up moisture laden air.

Of course you need to break it up to get it into the grinder.
a chisel or a heavy scraper should break it up easily enough.

I would not put it through a coffee grinder as it is corrosive and will likely mess up the grinder. Then you will be asking how to grind coffee. :)

Morton salt I believe is coated with some kind of silicate to prevent clumping.

If she just bought straight up NaCl, I think it can harden into quite the rock. We used to get rock salt for the driveway and you would need to bust it up a little.

Wow, I just looked it up. Morton Sea salt adds a form of Cynaide to the salt as an anti caking agent. Wonderful. I hear good things about cyanide.

"What chemicals are in Morton Salt?

Morton Iodized Table Salt contains food grade granulated sodium chloride selected from the middle screen fraction of vacuum pan production. Calcium silicate is incorporated as a free-flowing, anticaking additive; it is food grade and generally recognized as safe (GRAS)"
