It was a time delayed explosive built into it , to go off at this specific time . There is a vault underneath it that is to be opened to reveal to the world its fate .
The vault contains something very VERY specific .

Definitely an RPG or similar weapon fired at it from a short distance.

I've been there. There are cameras EVERYWHERE covering every angle.
There is no way a person could walk up and place an explosive next to it and detonate it from a distance - you would be seen on a camera.

My opinion - the group responsible for the Stones decided it was time to take it down.

If commercial explosives were used, the taggants will point to the manufacturer and the manufacturer maintains a distribution / sales traceability record. There are taggants in almost everything for just this kind of scenario. Just like in 2005 all cellphones have GPS chips that interface at the phone carrier level.

So whomever did it, the escape window is closing fast because the feds just love this kind of stuff for training purposes.
