I thought it would be interesting to see how they propose to be able to measure "critical thinking", since it is not at all obvious how to measure it, or even how to define it.

Looking into it, I saw that they use something called the "Ennis-Weir Critical Thinking Essay Test".

So I checked it out.

This is a test where you are given a boring and mostly retarded fictional "letter to the editor", complaining about people parking cars in the streets, and you are given the task to counter its arguments, paragraph by paragraph.

The people doing the test will then read your counter-arguments and score you, guided by Ennis-Weir's instructions.

It is clear that there is more than a little uncertainty involved here, since the scoring will be completely subjective. But let's put that aside and look at the test a little closer.

I won't go through the entire test, since it's long and boring as shit, but I'll show one of the paragraphs and discuss the instructions on how to score it.

Here's paragraph four:

4. Furthermore, there can be no doubt that, in general, overnight parking in the streets is undesirable. It is definitely bad and should be opposed.

If you are taking this test you are now given the task of producing a "counterargument" to this meaningless babble. And the instructions for how your answer should be graded are in short that it is supposedly correct to say:

-It is a circular argument

-It offers no reason to support the proposition

And it is supposedly incorrect to say:

-The writer has just stated his own preference.

-The writer hasn't shown that the supposedly undesirable thing is actually not desired by residents.

The reason given for why it is incorrect to say that he just stated his own preference, is because "there is nothing wrong with stating one's own personal opinion or preferences in an argument" (direct citation). Can't say I agree. Everyone is of course entitled to their own opinion, but stating it isn't an argument. "I don't like icecream" isn't an argument for outlawing icecream.

And the reason given for why you can't point out his lack of evidence the residents even agree, is because "There is a difference between claiming that something is undesirable and claiming that it is not desired" (direct citation). Apparently, you are being unfair to the author if you say he hasn't shown overnight parking is undesired, because he never claimed that, he just claimed it's undesirable. Which is apparently a completely different thing!

As you can see, the test defines retarded anal-retentive nitpicking about the distinction between undesirable and not desired as "critical thinking". Suffice to say, I don't agree in the slightest!

If I were to apply what I call critical thinking to this test itself, I would say it is a piss poor test. It is hardly testing anything remotely connected to critical thinking, instead it tests whether you can:

1. Read a boring as fuck text about some meaningless bullshit without falling asleep.

2. Pick apart the text with exactly the same kind of nitpicking grammar police mentality as the guy who came up with the test has. Since he is the definition of a perfect human being with perfect "critical thinking".

The test rewards nitpicking about unimportant details that simply don't matter, even in the context of this pretty unimportant matter. To score well on this test you would have to be unable to grasp the essence of anything, getting yourself stuck on irrelevant trivialities instead.

I would definitely score very poorly on this test, that's for sure. And yes, I do believe a powerful cabal runs this planet! Scoring poorly on this test is certainly correlated with believing in conspiracy theories!

Here is to say, there are good people who are never heard from because others are liars and the good ones only have their work and sometimes others steal it. There are not many over the years I haven't researched and taken the time to learn as much as I could find, we have some of this going on all the time now. It is easy to see.
