Got another reprieve today and the designation changed a bit. Idk if it makes much difference, but it's now CHRONIC stage 5 and not end stage. Doc says as long as I stay stable, no dialysis yet.

That is great news TB, hopefully it all stays stable for a long, long time and maybe even improves a bit. We take our blessings as they come.
 Quoting: 3abzzybee

Thanks abz. I don't think there's much difference in the designation. Stage 5 is as high as it goes. I just haven't gotten any worse in the last few months. I'd rather get better, but I'll hang on to stable!

Re: Coffee Crowd for Civilized Discourse on World Events
I've been trying to follow the events in Haiti. I've heard today that Mitch Albom, the writer, his wife and several others that were with them, were finally able to get out. I wasn't aware that he had started an orphanage down there years ago and that he and his wife go there every month.

I've known many people, over the years, that have gone down there on mission trips. It has always been an extremely troubled and dangerous country. Not going to get into the politics of it. That's as big as mess as the conditions are and it keeps on repeating the same mistakes. I have no answers for that.

I just need to say, don't get sucked into the narrative about ANY group of people that says they all deserve what they get and they're all evil. That's just not true! There's ALWAYS a remnant of good, even when all else around you is evil.

It's concerning to me that so many are lumping large groups/whole countries together as one entity. We should know, if we just look around us, that it isn't true.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. We are all individuals. Just because we were born in a country, region, family, religion, doesn't mean we buy into every drop of kool-aid served. Find the good people. They're still out there.

what happens when u dumb down education by worrying if ppl can b both sexes or push race devoted classes instead of what ppl need to know? u forget to teach them the important stuff. brains are filled with mis-info and junk and the good stuff doesn't get soaked up.

I am not sure I have ever endorsed a series. Not sure if I am equipped to do so, being a cynic.

However: "The Chosen" Four seasons, so far.

"The Chosen" is a poignant exploration of faith, humanity, and the profound impact one person can have on the world.

Bastetcat, Thanks! This is not normally "My cup of tea". However, one of the standout features of the series for me was its commitment to historical and cultural accuracy, with great attention paid to the details of first-century Jewish life and the political and social tensions of the time. About which before, sadly, I was completely clueless. Unfortunately, today's world has crept in and prevented the distribution of season 4, at least in SoCal.

I remember Xenia well. Others, too.

We're fine, everything has moved well to the east. People just to the south of us...not so much. Waiting for the news to come on to see vids. Some of the photos from the area are really bad. Indiana took several bad hits, too.

Re: Coffee Crowd for Civilized Discourse on World Events
"I did a radio show for years whose name, if you rearrange the letters, spells “Pie Aroma in Microphone,” a show of wholesome humor and uplifting music, nothing satanic or hallucinatory and only gently satiric, and yet it did well in New York City, and New Yorkers curbed their irony when they came in the door and listened politely.

The show was inspired by an article I wrote for The New Yorker about the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and being published there rather than in Popular Mechanics or Good Housekeeping gave me a patina of sophistication that appealed to the elitists of public radio and they opened the temple doors to me and on many stations, “Pie Aroma in Microphone” followed the Metropolitan Opera broadcast, sort of like the tail wagging the Wagner.

And my hero John Updike, back in the days of White Male Authorship, got me into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, one of only three humorists in the club, which looks darned good on my résumé. People from my hometown of Anoka, Minnesota, look at that and think, “Him? He didn’t even make National Honor Society in high school. He got a B minus in English and even that was generous.”

Had the article been about the Grand Canal in Venice, the Grand Canyon, Grandma Moses, Ole Bull, or optometry, or had I landed in the American Academy of Incarcerated Debtors, it would be a very different matter.

I am one of America’s few remaining octogenarian stand-up comics, still able to stand for up to two hours, even three, and in the current comedy crop, I am a classicist. I know about the engineer who’s sentenced to death and is laid, blindfolded, in the guillotine but they pull the lanyard and nothing happens, and try again, and again, and decide to commute his sentence to life in prison and they remove the blindfold, and he looks up and says, “Give me a pair of pliers, I see the problem.”

I am quite comfortable speaking at a church school. I am a Christian myself, I do believe that the Son of God came to this planet, the co-Creator of our solar system and infinite more solar systems and constellations billions of light years away, and when you can get your arms around the idea that God Almighty loves you personally, not just in theory, then you’ve achieved something remarkable, like juggling eight balls in the air while gargling “O sole mio.” But I’m not preachy about this. I’ve spoken to Jewish groups, and some of my best friends are Unitarians. I tell them, “If I’m wrong about the afterlife, no problem, I’ll just cease to be, but if you’re wrong and you face God, I’d like to see you talk your way out of that.”

I don’t require luxury accommodations. I’m fine with economy hotels. I prefer not to be put up in the home of a family with small children. A Holiday Inn Express is fine; they serve a nice scrambled-egg breakfast buffet. A coffeemaker in the room would be nice and I’d prefer a shower whose Hot and Cold knobs are not directly under the showerhead so that one must stand naked while figuring out which knob is which, dreading the possibility of being scalded and having to call 911 and moaning in pain as EMTs haul me to their van, and I know that I will now become their anecdote (“You won’t believe the call we got this morning …”) and they will google me and find out that I hosted “Pie Aroma in Microphone” and am in the Academy of Arts and Letters and yet I didn’t know to Stand Outside The Shower While Turning On Water. I don’t want to become a joke, okay?"

Re: Coffee Crowd for Civilized Discourse on World Events
In the case of this theory about the slowing of time since the Big Bang, it would be important to see if it makes specific, testable predictions that can be confirmed or refuted by observation or experiment.

For example, does this theory predict a specific relationship between the rate of time slowing since the Big Bang and the observed redshift of galaxies? Or does it predict a particular pattern in the distribution of dark matter?

If this theory can make accurate predictions that are borne out by empirical evidence, that would be a strong indication that it's on the right track.

A specific mathematical relationship between the rate of time slowing down since the Big Bang and the redshift of galaxies. For example, the theory might predict that the redshift increases in proportion to the square of the time slowing rate.

A particular distribution of dark matter that differs from what is predicted by current models. For example, the theory might predict that dark matter is less concentrated in regions where time is slowing more rapidly.

A modification of the observed relationship between the distance and velocity of galaxies. In current models, galaxies appear to be moving away from us at a rate proportional to their distance, but this theory might predict a more complex relationship.

A different pattern of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation than what is predicted by current models. This could potentially provide evidence for the slowing of time since the Big Bang in the early universe.

Thread: Understanding of the Fundamental nature of Reality.

If time has been slowing down since the Big Bang, we might expect to see a relationship between the rate of time slowing and the redshift of galaxies. Additionally, the distribution of dark matter and the pattern of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation could potentially provide clues about how time has evolved over the history of the universe.

That was what got me fascinated with severe weather and ultimately led to me becoming a storm spotter. I was eight and we were driving to see family. We drove through Parker City, Indiana, minutes after an F4 destroyed the town. I was riveted. I still remember everything I saw to this day.

With all the storms I've chased, I've still only ever seen one other F4 tornado, and I have yet to witness an F5.

I've been really fortunate to have only seen cold weather funnel spin ups and massive wall clouds! Don't want to actually/physically see a tornado. They've always been close, but never too close. The closest was about a mile away. I have seen the aftermath of several, though.

I learned to spot in Texas, out of necessity. The South Plains is an awesome place for storms. We used to sit outside and watch them move, miles away. Amazing power.

When we took Skywarn for CERT, I was surprised at how much I already knew. Lubbock had the best meteorologists. I learned more than I realized from Ron Roberts on KMAC. Lubbock had an F-5 (at the time) go through the city years ago. They still acknowledge it to this day, with news specials. It was years before our time there, but I know people that survived it.

I'll be honest. I can be very happy just chasing virtually these days and never seeing one in person!
