Seriously hope grid stays up. I can add layers or start a fire in the fireplace if it happens in winter.

It's been some years since it's been that hot, but not unusual for the South Plains. Sounds like a good year for a swamp cooler instead of ac.
 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

2011 and 1980 were really hot. I think we're headed to beat all records this summer.
 Quoting: Moniker Shmoniker

There was another summer on the South Plains that was really dry and hot. Can't remember exactly when, but I think it was later than 2011. Was 2011 the year the ranchers drove all over the country hauling hay? That was the worst I remember.

Hey, welcome to the new thread, my friend!
hi
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Delighted to be here.

And to be honest I'm glad that AC's aren't posting here.

Too many people can't handle anonymity in a useful way; at least useful in terms of being constructive.

The vile and vitriol that seems to spread to any worthwhile thread, added to the nonsensical threads and the concerted forum sliding behaviors are on a definite upswing.

To the point that it, in my opinion only, threatens the viability of a site like this.

I value an oasis of sanity, thanks for taking it on, Riff.

Agree with you Croc - and thanks Riff

we're goina need a bigger page to keep the list.

"virus called parechovirus, which can cause severe illness in infants younger than 3 months, is spreading in the U.S...
, it can lead to seizures, swelling of the brain and surrounding tissue, and sepsis-like illness, often requiring hospitalization. Sepsis is when the body's response to an infection damages the body and leads to poor organ function. Sepsis symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, sweating and extreme pain. Parechovirus infection can also lead to long-term neurodevelopmental issues, though it's rare.

Shedding from the upper respiratory tract can last up to three months and in the gastrointestinal tract up to six months, per the CDC. Infected individuals who do not have any symptoms can also spread the virus."

i'll try to put up a list, might miss some.

HEP, HF Asia, HF Africa, kid virus -menegitits i believe it was FL, new kid virus national, CP, some assume this was MP mis-translated, am not convinced. outbreak pre-dates MP by month or so. MP< other translations point to SP, weird fever- NK, INDIA- this might b the new covid variant, again let's not assume yet.

count 9 reported odd outbreaks. and we haven't looked at animal outbreaks.

how long do u think it would take the CDC to run the tests to varify 1 and how many ppl need to b sick with it before they would even file a report? a local DR ain't goina know what he is seeing with a new disease or mutated form. many would b mis-diagnosed or left as unknown. if patient dies while waiting results from ATLANTA- just lose the file, no reason to keep running the analysis.

how many trees have to catch fire to count as a forest fire?

Cooling off in extreme heat without power is fairly easy if you still have water pressure. Just take as cold a shower as you can stand for about 15 minutes, then put on as few clothes as possible. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as you possibly can. And do chores at night after the sun has gone down, or better yet, very early in the morning.

If you have a basement, plan to live down there while power is out. It will stay cooler longer. Put storm windows in place and then block all windows with curtains designed to keep light out.

 Quoting: Bastetcat

I've been thinking about that. I would never say that making such information available to the public is meaningless. One of the worst things we ever did in this country was do away with Civil Defense. As long as nuclear weapons exist, I think we need to bring that back.

Do I think it's "meaningful"? Well, the timing is at the very least coincidental. I think what has people spooked is that in films like The Day After and Threads, there is always a buildup of tensions, including media broadcasting what to do "in the event of a probable attack," and then the missiles are launched. Don't let that get under your skin.

That being said, two of the largest nuclear powers on the planet are antagonizing another large nuclear power. The rhetoric from Russia especially is on a level not seen since Kruschev. Does this mean that a nuclear exchange is imminent? I don't think so. Not yet, anyway. If it's going to happen, there will be an event to trigger it. For example, a civilian airliner shot down like KAL 007. That almost triggered a nuclear exchange.

The worst part of the nuclear response PSAs is they have been dumbed down to the point of almost being useless. And they contain some unrealistic information as well. However, it's better than nothing. NYC has always been the top target to hit with a nuclear weapon if you really want to hurt America, even more so than DC. So I find the timing interesting, but not concerning. I'll get worried when these PSAs start showing up in more cities across the country.

But for now, I wouldn't stress over it.

It was! We had a friend that had to keep driving farther north and east to buy hay. People kept trying to buy what he found on the way home. He ended up buying a semi and flatbed to haul hay back. Made enough to pay off the rig by the late fall. That was a really bad year.
