This is my understanding:

The spike molecules created by the gene-mod are flowing through you blood stream and for some people they attach to organs or blood vessels linings.

Then your white blood cells start attacking the spikes, which creates a blood clot.

I wonder if playing the guitar had created some stresses on the hands and fingers that made it more susceptible to the spike molecules attaching there?
