All thug defenders in this thread assumes the store owner must be a mind reader and somehow magically knows the thug is just after merchandise. That is not how self defense works. The perp committed forceful entry of an occupied dwelling and knowingly so. Such action is always assumed to be violent threat and treated as such. The defender is not expected to read the attackers mind and know he was just trying to pay for rocket surgery for his sick grandma.
