While it appears the wallet is only being used as a substitute for driver’s licenses and other basic ID cards, the government states that they intend to expand the wallet to be more all-encompassing.

“In the future, more documents are going to be added to the application, such as registration details, registration fee payment details, vehicle technical inspection (VOT) results and next inspection date, insurance details etc.,” writes the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance.

Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis also stated that the government is “creating a system for banks and telecom providers starting October 1, as well as for agencies requiring the user to show an ID. A digital trace will be created instead of copies of one’s ID, turning into digital proof something that has been a burden to provide in physical form.”

I encourage everyone to investigate the tech company ID.Me. They are backed by big banks and financial, and they already have contracts with over 25 state governments.

In TX, one is 'required' to be verified through ID.Me as a condition to receive unemployment benefits...docs including birth certs, SS, DL, other licenses, legal property docs and...wait for it...biometric data gathered through a BS requirement to install their app on your phone and have a face-to-face with a rep.

But, here's the real kicker: you must (are forced to) enter into legal, binding contract with ID.me and in that contract and TOS, you agree to provide them with your data; you agree they own your data, and you also agree to the TOS with Google.

Many states are 'requiring' citizens to legally enter into binding contracts with third parties to obtain public services. Let that sink in. That's illegal.

"Required" unless you get your State AG and congressional representatives involved and raise all holy hell, which I have done.

This is just a stupid app, nothing special. What they already know for someone, just presented via a smartphone app. It is not even useful because it cannot be used as a traveling document but rather a convinient way to have your ID with you if you forgot your printed one at home and the police happens to stop you for some checks. As for the "spying" part, they can do it without you knowing via your phone since they have all this kind of information from the telephone companies, so they don't need any crappy app probably created by interns.
