It was used to kill big game

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
Meat.

Whatever they could kill.
Each man was eating a few pounds of wild game...per day!
Possibly as much as 5 pounds (per day, per man) on occasion.

The rifles they were issued (by Thomas Jefferson)
were the top of the line for the time.
(As the AR-15/M-4 is today)
They were carrying 50 cal. Black Powder Rifles.
Lewis even had a B.B. Gun! Really!

As for fruits and vegetables...
not so much, not much at all, very, very, little.
Why not?
Because they were men, on a long camping trip, without women
(except for a young squaw they hooked-up with)
Sure, they picked a few berries if easily available.
What they wanted was BEAR MEAT.
But deer and elk were acceptable too.

Then when they got to the Columbia River.....
The bears and wild boars were no more to be found easily.
Instead they had ample salmon, plenty of salmon.
Which the men HATED!
Because they wanted MEAT!
They ate salmon for the winter...and that was about it.

Then they turned around and went home.
End of Story.

Their return to civilization was a VERY BIG DEAL!
An AMAZZING achievement
for a young United States of America
Comparable to Neil Armstrong... stepping onto-the-moon.
(I know, I know; but that's how the story goes)

And guess what happened to those men who only ate MEAT?

Do you know?

I don't know...they ALL returned home safely as HEROS!!!!

And then Lewis killed himself.
What a shitty ending to a great story.

Got milk?
Got Meat?
Beef, it's good for you.
Pig, the other white meat.
And Chicken...which actually tastes like chicken.
(Personally...I LOVE Red Sockeye Salmon)
Sardines too!

Just wanted to share a little American History with you.
Because soon, very soon....
You know what's coming don't you?
Sure, you're on GLP.

They plan on feeding us bugs.
You'll own nothing, eat bugs, and enjoy your slavery.
NO MORE MEAT!
Because animal flesh makes men STRONG, AGGRESSIVE, HEALTHY
and constantly HORNY.

Yep, eat meat and fight, fuck, hunt and fish.

Can't have that in the New World Order
Can we?

They survived on crickets and the occasional frog legs.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 82967808

If you eat frog legs, do you also have to eat the feet?
Quoting: Where Eagles Dare

You skin the frog first, so there isn't much meat left in the footsie area, just bones & tendon.

Yes, it's much like chicken, looks white but taste more like dark meat.

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
may be you should asked google first.

From William Clark’s journal: “It requires 4 deer, or an elk and a deer, or one buffalo to supply us for 24 hours.” Additionally, 193 pounds of “portable soup” were ordered as an emergency ration when stores ran out and game was scarce or unavailable.

The soup was produced by boiling a broth down to a gelatinous consistency, then further drying it until it was rendered quite hard and desiccated. Not exactly a favorite with the men, it nonetheless saved them from near starvation on a number of occasions. Each man consumed 9 pounds of meat per day, when available, and the designated hunters of the Corps were never without work during the entire journey.

Deer (all species combined) 1,001; Elk 375; Bison 227; Antelope 62; Bighorn sheep 35; Bears, grizzly 43; Bears, black 23; Beaver (shot or trapped) 113; Otter 16; Geese and Brant 104; Grouse (all species) 46; Turkeys 9; Plovers 48; Wolves (only one eaten) 18; Indian dogs (purchased and consumed) 190; Horses 12.

In addition to this list, the Corps ate countless smaller animals such as hawk, coyote, fox, crow, eagle, gopher, muskrat, seal, whale blubber, turtle, mussels, crab, salmon and trout. It also does not list the many then-unfamiliar varieties of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, seeds and nuts that were found to be edible. However, all these are mentioned in the journals, oftentimes accompanied by detailed accounts of the adventures associated with their gathering.

Wow. It takes a lot of meat to survive harsh conditions. No vegans need apply.

Wonder if they came across Indian tribes who helped them out?

They ate their own horses when game was scarce. Although they much preferred the dogs they obtained from the indians.

"Corps member Raymond Darwin Burroughs tallied the quantity of game killed and consumed during the course the expedition thusly:
Deer (all species combined) 1,001;
Elk 375;
Bison 227;
Antelope 62;
Bighorn sheep 35;
Bears, grizzly 43;
Bears, black 23;
Beaver (shot or trapped) 113;
Otter 16; Geese and Brant 104;
Grouse (all species) 46;
Turkeys 9;
Plovers 48;
Wolves (only one eaten) 18;
Indian dogs (purchased and consumed) 190;
Horses 12.

It also does not list the many then-unfamiliar varieties of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, seeds and nuts that were found to be edible. However, all these are mentioned in the journals, oftentimes accompanied by detailed accounts of the adventures associated with their gathering.

The Corps found many different subspecies of deer plentiful across the continent, and venison became a staple throughout the expedition. Bison herds were huge on the Great Plains and, when the Corps crossed the Rocky Mountains, they turned to salmon and wapato (arrowroot), a starchy tuber, as their staples. By necessity, their diet changed according to the changing country over which they traveled, as well as seasonal climatic changes."

goddamn.

the chestnut blight was the greatest ecological disaster in the US history. 25% of trees in the US were chestnut trees and they dropped tons of chestnuts which were high in protein like peanuts. probably 30% or more of wildlife died off as a result.

this emerald ash borer is already one of greatest ecological disasters, it is just mowing down ash trees which are great trees but there are other varieties to replace/grow in but still. i'm just not completely sure why they only target ash trees, if they started killing other trees, that would be potentially desertification event

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
What Lewis and Clark Ate

To understand how difficult and physically demanding the Corps of Discovery Expedition was, you need only look at the amount of food they consumed. On July 13, 1805, Clark wrote: “We eat an emensity of meat; it requires 4 deer, or an elk and a deer, or one buffaloe to supply us plentifully 24 hours.” When wild game was plentiful, each man consumed up to 9 pounds of meat in one day. That’s a lot of protein! Meat was vital to their diet; it helped to fill their hungry bellies and gave them the strength required to pull canoes and carry heavy loads. The types of meat that were eaten also served as a reflection of the season, terrain and climate they encountered. Bison and deer were prominent during the crossing of the Great Plains, while salmon and a starchy tuber known as wapato kept them nourished as they entered territory west of the Rocky Mountains. Fish was eaten in abundance, a favorite being the eulachon, or candlefish, which Lewis claimed to be “superior to any fish” he had ever tasted. At Fort Clatsop, elk was in large supply. It was served boiled, dried and roasted for breakfast, lunch and dinner. During their journey, Lewis, Clark and their fellow travelers extracted salt from seawater by way of evaporation through boiling. Salt was used as a flavor enhancer, but it was also essential in preserving meat; it helped to give their perishable meat supply a longer shelf life. 50%<

Re: What did the Lewis & Clark Expedition eat on their two year journey?
meat eaters give all sorts of reasons
to continue to fill their stomachs with dead animals
like giving lewis and clark as a good excuse to
continue to kill billions of animals
to cover up and shame and guilt of being addicted
the animal flesh and animal blood.
that heme flavor of blood.

its like saying oh, eskeeeeemoes eat mostly animals
so everyone on earth should eat animals
these fucking people have no choice but to eat meat.

we have fucking silos full of non animals foods, billions of fruit trees, most land farmed for all sorts of calorie dense food. but still these meat heads just want meat.

now these psychopaths want to only eat meat, kill more animals. just look at your fucking teeth, claws, digestive system, there is nothing that would suggest you are a dumb fucking carnivore. humans are shit scared of tackling animals and ripping their throat out. rather all humans disdain this behavior as you would cry your eyes out like a bitch.

even though there is enough non fucking dead animals food
they think killing things that dont want to die
is 100% ok.

there are fucking fruits hanging everywhere,
but the fat fuckers just look around
looking to kill

this is the fucking devil
right in front of us
and we dont even know it

this lurking type of behavior
preferring to kill things
this innate desire to murder things
preferring death just to satisfy the fucking tongue

instead of doing the hard work or farming, harvesting,
they just want to slaughter living things,
to capture, breed, jail, feed, animals just for the purpose of killing. fucking psychopathic behavior when there is plenty of food thanks to technology.
even with all the modern advancements, humans just want to kill and kill and kill.
bible says dont kill but sick men changed the wording to do not murder, so they can continue to kill animals and kill humans in war.
kill anything, everything.
probably anything that moves, humans have tasted,
even human flesh.

meat eaters,
especially the unthankful
fat fuckers,
with a guts bigger than a pregnant girl
who thinks god and bible allowed them to kill animals for fun

the fuckers with blood pressure high from
clogging the shit out of their body with
unnatural hardened animal cholesterol.
the ones ready to pop anytime soon.

nonsense

you are the devil.
there is nothing more evil
than killing for fun.
the fun refers to your enjoyment
of tasting blood and animal flesh
the callousness of the heart knowing something died
for the purpose of entertaining your fat tongue
while there is unlimited food

meat eaters are archaic.

eating meat while there is unlimited food.

is like eating humans when there are animals.

yes people will eat humans when they are hungry

yes people will eat animals when their harvest fails

but to eat humans when there are animals
and to eat animals when there are bountiful harvest

is fucking barbaric.
