Did Rodin speak English? Stop ducking the question
» "poings serrés " = clenched fists Quoting: JADR+ Thank you. So actually Rodin said the thinker has both fist closed. Judging at how closed they actually are, we can see he was clearly exaggerating his description to convey a certain artistic point he was trying to make. This is a thing that exist in many languages and especially french. Just like a sculptor will make his statues have dramatic poses, reflection an exaggerated reality, so is he doing in his description of it, claiming he has both fists clenched (when it is obvious it doesn't) to illustrate the internal struggle of the character
