I was never a fan of JRR myself. My son and daughter were avid readers by 10, and I thought it was so funny that everyone was amazed at the size of the Potter books. I think I read the first one in one day. If it had been one of the penguin books I had when young it would have been less than 200 pages. They had really small type and little margins...

The good news is that children that read those stupid books were much more likely to read other "big" books. Mine did Pillars of the Earth not long after Potter. That book is a masterpiece and is very educational. You feel like you can build a cathedral, church, town, whatever when you are done.

The Pillars of the Earth, Follett tells readers that he grew up in a Puritan-based family, whose worship space was very sparse. In preparing for writing, he was reading about medieval architecture, and:

It was a similar argument about the traditional story of Mulan. Modern telling of the story is that it was a girl that had to pretend to be male to join the ranks of men. But in the original story, when comrades visited the former soldier at Mulan's home they were surprised to find him/her in women's clothes and didn't recognize him/her. So, was is a female playing a male? Or was it a male playing a female?
