Pop it into neutral, hit the brakes, then put in park and turn the key off or hit the "Start/Stop" button. If the engine blows up, then it blows up. It's not rocket science. There are about 3 things that every driver should be prepared to do instantly in certain events. The first I just described. The second is what if the brake pedal goes straight to the floor. (ruptured brake line). Pump the brakes rapidly to regain braking if possible. (There is a system isolator in the master cylinder that should activate and preserbe braking on the remaining 2 wheels. (front and back brakes are each independant systems. when you pump the brakes, it will sense the failure and switch to a 2 wheel brake mode.) If this also fails, apply the parking brake. (if you didn't also do this immediately, which you might do according to the situtation). The third is to take your emergency maneuver. "Always leave yourself an out". This means drive to maintain some emergency space around your vehicle. (I had a funny typo there at first. left off the e and wrote "Mergency, which actually could be a good descriptive new term, emergency merge). This means obviously no tailgating to have space in front, but also keep the lanes clear of vehicles if possible, and always know the status of those side lanes. You might have a split second to change lanes and avoid a hazard that pops up right ahead of you, like a car coming the other way crosses the median or the double yellow line. Or a wheel might come off a trailer ahead of you, or a truck cap might come off right ahead of you, or a truck might lose part of its load right in front of you. An instant swerge to the lane next to you can save your ass if you know it is already vacant. And pay attention to your driving, and what everyone is doing around you. I know if the guy over there is lighting a cigarette or otherwise distracted and not looking. I have driven probably close to 2 million miles all over this country and never had an accident. I have had all of the above happen to me. Flat tire front, flat tire rear, various levels of skids, blizzards, crazy people coming head on across the yellow line, crazy people changing 6 lanes of traffic and trying to hit my right side bliind spot. Brake failure due to a line rupture on an old car as a kid, I have had tire/wheel come off of the vehicle ahead of me, wheel barrows come off open bed trucks that hit in front of me at night and make a huge shower of sparks, table leg flipped out of a pickup truck that was moving a dining table. (the table legs were the weight they used to hold a moving blanket on the table. The wind caught the moving blanket and popped the table leg into the air. Came right at my windshield when we are all doing about 70 mph. You name it. Expect the crazy shit to happen. When you do, you can avoid what most people say is unavoidable. If you drive enough miles, you will have it all happen to you. If you want to live, this is the level of care you need to use driving. Most people think I am a crazy fast wreckless driver. Safety comes from being aware of everything and having fast reflexes and plans to mitigate any hazards, not from driving below the speed limit and pissing off traffic behind. IDK...apparently it doesn't go in to neutral with the accelerator wide open...not sure They didn't mention that as an option so I imagine it wasn't possible Any car will go into Neutral with the gas all the way to the floor. You will likley damage the engine and transmission doing that if it's an automatic but you wont die. Maybe. People aren't smart enough to do this. Or they are scared when the engine revs up to 8000 rpms and blows. This should not cause damage to either component. All engines today are computer controlled and come standard with a ‘rev-limiter’ that does not allow the engine to spin faster that a predetermined value specific to each engine’s capabilities. The transmission might experience a rough unloading shifting into neutral under full-load, but this will not likely result in any damage, in most cases. |

It was remote control driven, just like Michael Hastings and the woman in LA a few weeks ago that ended in a fireball. When you are afraid of losing your life, you have already lost your life. Dude you are one sick individual with all this Anne Heche BS, a third rate actress that a majority of people would not have been able to pick out from a crowd. Her real claim to fame came as a result of her intimate relationship with another woman. She was drunk and likely under the influence of other drugs when she crashed her vehicle into a house and several other vehicles. That’s it, case closed now deal with it in silence |

[link to www.northamericanmotoring.com (secure)] Throttle/Accelerator Sticks-Mini Winds Up In the Drink On 8/10/05 our 2005 3 month old 800 mile young (she's coddled) mini s, automatic was being driven at a low speed in a parking area, when it began accelerating, ultimatley to near 60mph, as it the operator had the presence of mind to steer the vehicle away from the highway and other cars in the parking lot, out into a field, they pulled their feet back to look at the pedals to see if any foreign object was against them. Luckily the car came to rest in a pond and apparently no serious physical injury was inflicted on the driver but I am not sure what the outcome will be for the car. It was submerged in a good 4.5' of water. I am curious to know of possible causes. I have seen mention on other forums of a fly-by-wire throttle arrangement that is used in the mini and the potential for that to fail and default to an open position. I have also seen another mention of an accelerator pedal sticking down and needing to be freed by the toe of the operaqtor to prevent a catastrophy. Any feedback would be very helpful and guidance about how to proceed. Any New England based examiners that can be recommended? Our fear is that if the problem was caused by a computer malfunction the data may be lost to water damage. The dealership/salesman was cold as ice when informed and absolutely not interested in discussing the issue. |
