Why would ANYONE buy a used suitcase "at an auction"??

Is this supposed to be when the airlines lose your luggage? They keep in warehouses and, instead of finding the rightful owners, they auction them off, like storage units?

They bought the contents of an abandoned storage locker and when they took the trailer load of items home and starting sorting through it all, they got a nasty surprise.
