WTF?

About 2 or 3 months ago, on a Friday afternoon at about 3:00 pm, we had a racoon come into the yard and go after our free ranging chickens.

Both the wife and i were home and immediately heard the commotion at the same time.

We both run towards the back door and the wife yelled to me "racoon"....and then yelled "grab the shotgun".

It ended up latching on to a favorite older hen. It took 3 shots of point blank buck to get it to release her. The 4th shot put it down for good.

We bagged the racoon up and we later contacted fish and game.

They came out and took the racoon for testing.

Sure enough it tested positive for rabies.

If the flock was not out it would've come after one of us.

The wife initially tried to grab it off the hen but realized it could be rabid. She let go and washed her hands right away. That's when I made it into Swiss cheese.

The state nurse, after the positive testing, called us and still recommended consideration of the rabies shots protocols.

The total cost for the shots was $30K.

Yep, you read that right. Our insurance covered all but $1500.00.

If you live in the sticks, be careful and pay attention to you surroundings 100 percent of the times folks.

And always carry or have something nearby.


(The hen did not make it. She was a good girl and had raised several groups of hatchling. The rabid racoon had torn her up a bit, and pierced her lung, or air sack, in Avian terminology .... and sadly there is no recovery from that)

We have a lot of Foxes around here in Pa... even in the suburbs.

At my mom's house out in the country, the Foxes and the feral cats are at odds with eachother.

No such thing as rabies???! I take it you're one of those people who also believe that viruses don't exist and that they're just aberrant protein complexes generated by your own body... look, I subscribe to many conspiracies in the medical and scientific world, but that one is utter nonsense. Not only does rabies exist, but it's extraordinary adaptive and deadly, capable of controlling virtually every element of your immune system to become invisible to your body's defenses.
