Does anybody here on my GLP collect & flip coins? (Pun intended) | |

Most are all sleeved, some graded and placed into sealed plastic holders. So all those stories that you hear about jars of old coins found in walls and buried in backyards, you've just got to know that there was no concern or even knowledge about numismatic value say 80-100 years ago, as it was all about the metal value. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79354984 United States 12/30/2022 02:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have about 10 pounds of silver coins- mostly half dollars. A big jar full of gold filled scrap, I’m saving up cash for some nitric acid.. And a big bin of silver scrap I’ve been collecting for years. About half gallon of wheat pennies, a few rolls of Indian head pennies and a roll of steel pennies. Lots of raw and cut gem stones. I haven’t weighed my gold lately, but just did a house clean out where the previous owner apparently had 3 million in gold and I found probably close to an ounce of gold there! Still picking diamonds out of it to weigh. I view my collection as a thing to enjoy mostly. But some day it may also be my retirement.. I never buy gold or silver at market value, but I will spend my last dollar buying either at good rates. I hit up lots of estate sales and thrift stores. Never sell. I’ve been looking for some big chunks of PVC pipe to store some of this stuff as a time capsule for safe keeping. |

I appreciated the artistry & aestheticism so much just started buying every single one that caught my eye. Some of them are actually quite rare and we're quite expensive to aquire but not really in it for the $$$ value anyway... Here's a few photos of the collection from back in Oct '21. User ID: 80707655 United States 12/30/2022 02:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Have fun with it! It's a great hobby. Sorry to hear some were stolen. Good advice so far. Don't clean coins. Learn to handle coins on the edges. Also, steel pennies are cool, but not necessarily worth a lot. You find an authentic copper 1943, you're in luck. Collect long enough and occasionally you might see tokens, like civil war tokens or 20th century sales tax tokens. There are other cool things like 3 cent nickels, half dimes and other stuff. Mostly coins are fun. There are stories. You can learn a lot about a country in a given time by studying its coins. You might be able to make some money selling your old coins, but like anything, it would take skill, practice, experience, some luck. Keep records, mind tax obligations and all that. A couple of learning resources here: [link to www.thesprucecrafts.com (secure)] [link to www.cointalk.com (secure)] The people over at Cointalk are friendly and can answer questions. Do you have a local coin shop? If so, stop by and get to know them. Some are high-end and are only interested in big sales. Some are down to earth. Get to know them and see if you can trust them. Do they have any professional coin certification/memberships? Gainesville Coins is well known. They usually only buy silver/gold. Mintproducts is a small business that specializes in collectible coins. Highly recommended. They also do auctions. A coin is only worth what a purchaser will pay for it. Just because something is rare or valuable doesn't mean there's a market for it at the moment. You can guess at values by checking out different sites. PCGS, NGC, and ANACS are three of the major grading companies that may have coin selling history. Is it worth getting a coin graded? Depends. Sometimes it's a waste of money. You have to decide whether professional grading and encapsulation will increase the likely selling price enough to justify grading. If you want to learn more about pennies, here are some guide books to look for: [link to coins.thefuntimesguide.com (secure)] Good luck! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 79354984 United States 12/30/2022 02:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Also; the house I just cleaned out was full of numismatic paraphernalia. 2 generations of lawyers who were also exceptionally well read and traveled. I saved what I could but threw out a massive law library and many more excellent books- I donated a few bins of the classics to a cafe that will resell them, but it was a tragedy how much quality litterateur gets wasted. I got lots of coin containers. I pulled as many pages out of photo albums as I could with pictures of megalithic sites from around the world! Incredible pictures of the fine details that are hard to find online. Then last night I found myself at a pawnshop on the way home, just to check. They had mercury dimes for $4 and ozs for $40. Gold was ridiculous. This is definitely the time to hoard up what you can, but be smart about it. Craigslist jewelry is the ticket. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 81668426 Australia 12/30/2022 02:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The top dollar for old coins is in high graded examples. Quoting: Pistis Sophia of the 13th Aeon The prices for ungraded, circulated coins are (falsely) inflated and you can sit on an uncommon, unmarked coin listed for $50 for months without a legit buyer. Bottom line is, do it if you enjoy it, but don't expect to become rich from selling or collecting. Mine aren't beautiful but they're in great condition. First rule in coin collecting is, no matter how tempting it is to clean or shine that old coin up,........ Don't do it. |

My favorite civil war token says ‘liberty’ on one side and ‘if anyone tries to take it down, shoot him on the spot’ Always made me proud to have that one.. I also have several worlds fair medallions. I think it’s actually a very dark tragedy, the worlds fairs- not exhibitions of progress, but a display of the past before the globalists destroyed it all. I don’t love those coins, but some are very valuable for a bronze coin.. |
