Quoting: Pistis Sophia of the 13th Aeon The prices for ungraded, circulated coins are (falsely) inflated and you can sit on an uncommon, unmarked coin listed for $50 for months without a legit buyer. Bottom line is, do it if you enjoy it, but don't expect to become rich from selling or collecting. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ You can win a coin in an auction on ebay for 75.00 and flip it for 150 if you have the time... @Godsarmymilitia |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78121322 United States 12/30/2022 09:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Have fun searching... As I said, I've been doing it for more then 20 years and have only found two of value. I literally have a box of 1982 pennies sitting next to me, and not one of them is the rare one. I also search coins on eBay and 95% of the time, the coin they are selling is worth face value. They simply don't know better or they aren't honest. I've also had coins graded that I thought would be near MS 30, and they ended up being MS RB 25. It's not easy and it's rare to find older coins or errors. But have at it. If you sell a coin on Ebay claiming it's valuable, and it's not Ebay will refund it to the buyer. Sending the coin back to you will cost more than the face value dollar amount. It takes YEARS to do this honestly and to learn the correct errors. Most doubled die coins are simple mechanical and they aren't worth anything more than face value. Best way to know for sure is having them graded and that is costly. Sometimes far more than the actual value of the coin. |

But finding it without paying a ton of money is almost impossible. Back in the 90's you could find silver in change. My bank would hold all half dollars and dollars for me and I found a lot of silver that way. Try going to a bank to day to buy half dollars. The worker will hold them sideways and pull all of the valuable ones out. Ain't worth it at all. |

Quoting: TwentyTwenty However in the past 5 or 6 years I've been saving & looking thru my change. All American coins. I've been googling the value of my coins & a majority of them are worth much more than their face value. Is this just wishful thinking...or are they worth what the internet says? For instance I have a 1969 D penny in really great condition. Says it's worth like $12 or such... I've always wanted to mess around with this subject. Maybe this is a reminder for me to do so. |

Don’t pay attention to eBay, most are novices trying to grade their own coins, or fake double dies. I primarily use the red book for reference. Just remember the value of a coin is what a person is willing to pay for it, and that’s all. Quoting: ELCapitanObvious absolutely! machine doubling is worthless but many with their high powered USB microscopes think they found something I always check with Wexler's - the absolute authority on doubled die coins and varieties [link to doubleddie.com (secure)] |

I've started collecting coins/bills.. it's only been since July and I've found a 1964 nickel, deep cameo with full steps, many star notes and bills with fun numbers. I'm not trying to get rich, I just needed a fun hobby and now I'm addicted! The deep cameo 1964 nickel is exciting though.. may get it graded. I'm still learning and keeping perfect bills, all denominations, and coins also. I think when they stop using cash, I can give to my young niece/nephews. May be worth something when cash/coins stop printing. This won't happen in my lifetime. Such a fun hobby! |
