The top dollar for old coins is in high graded examples.

The prices for ungraded, circulated coins are (falsely) inflated and you can sit on an uncommon, unmarked coin listed for $50 for months without a legit buyer.

Bottom line is, do it if you enjoy it, but don't expect to become rich from selling or collecting.

You can win a coin in an auction on ebay for 75.00 and flip it for 150 if you have the time...

I just find gold in a bag of jewelry at a thrift store for a few bucks. Last time I made 600 on a gold chain that I got for eight bucks. Magnets do not pick up gold nor silver. 18 Karat acid tests silver. Buy the acid on Amazon.

Have fun searching...

As I said, I've been doing it for more then 20 years and have only found two of value.

I literally have a box of 1982 pennies sitting next to me, and not one of them is the rare one.

I also search coins on eBay and 95% of the time, the coin they are selling is worth face value. They simply don't know better or they aren't honest.

I've also had coins graded that I thought would be near MS 30, and they ended up being MS RB 25.

It's not easy and it's rare to find older coins or errors.

But have at it.

If you sell a coin on Ebay claiming it's valuable, and it's not Ebay will refund it to the buyer. Sending the coin back to you will cost more than the face value dollar amount.

It takes YEARS to do this honestly and to learn the correct errors.

Most doubled die coins are simple mechanical and they aren't worth anything more than face value.

Best way to know for sure is having them graded and that is costly. Sometimes far more than the actual value of the coin.

For those who are still interested, the best bet currently is searching the state quarters. It's easy to find error info online and because each design is different for each state there are more errors to be found.

Know your stuff and be honest.

Years ago (account was scrubbed) there was a poster 'Punk A$$ets' who made his living on ebay etc. selling coins of merit. He seemingly did very well in his endeavour. At one point in my life (toxicly ill from black mold) my collection of palladium saved me from 'going without' Bought at $176.00 an Oz sold at $700.00. Not bad for a few years work and I lived nicely as my friend took me sailing in the Straight of Georgia for 7 months to 'fill me with sea air'.

Selling true silver and gold is different than just selling regular coins.

Real silver will always sell and it doesn't have to be graded.

But finding it without paying a ton of money is almost impossible.

Back in the 90's you could find silver in change. My bank would hold all half dollars and dollars for me and I found a lot of silver that way.

Try going to a bank to day to buy half dollars. The worker will hold them sideways and pull all of the valuable ones out.

Ain't worth it at all.

I've been collecting coins for a long time until they were stolen.

However in the past 5 or 6 years I've been saving & looking thru my change. All American coins.

I've been googling the value of my coins & a majority of them are worth much more than their face value.

Is this just wishful thinking...or are they worth what the internet says?

For instance I have a 1969 D penny in really great condition.

Says it's worth like $12 or such...

I collect coins. Prices are higher now on Pennie’s, nickels and dimes. Don’t pay attention to eBay, most are novices trying to grade their own coins, or fake double dies. I primarily use the red book for reference. Just remember the value of a coin is what a person is willing to pay for it, and that’s all.

absolutely! machine doubling is worthless but many with their high powered USB microscopes think they found something

I've started collecting coins/bills.. it's only been since July and I've found a 1964 nickel, deep cameo with full steps, many star notes and bills with fun numbers. I'm not trying to get rich, I just needed a fun hobby and now I'm addicted! The deep cameo 1964 nickel is exciting though.. may get it graded. I'm still learning and keeping perfect bills, all denominations, and coins also. I think when they stop using cash, I can give to my young niece/nephews. May be worth something when cash/coins stop printing. This won't happen in my lifetime.

Such a fun hobby!

Get a decent metal detector and the oldest map of your area. Search around old bars and stores. Also old outhouses (coins fall out of pockets). My cousin does very well at this.
