I collect coins. Prices are higher now on Pennie’s, nickels and dimes. Don’t pay attention to eBay, most are novices trying to grade their own coins, or fake double dies. I primarily use the red book for reference. Just remember the value of a coin is what a person is willing to pay for it, and that’s all.

absolutely! machine doubling is worthless but many with their high powered USB microscopes think they found something

I always check with Wexler's - the absolute authority on doubled die coins and varieties

That's right a coin is what you can get for it...I saw a rainbow toned Morgan dollar go for 450 the other night. common date...

At one time I had over 1000 silver dollars. Sold most of them in 2011. I do have a 1800's gold dollar. I wish I had all the coins I have bought and sold in my life.

I never sell any of my coins, or get rid of my pocket change.

Someday when I have a bunch of free time I will have to go through all those jugs of coins to see what has value.

I just found 4 jars of US coins I saved a long time ago. That helped fill in a lot of holes in my coin collection. I was surprised by how much of them were AU.

I have about 50 silver certificates one of my sons collected. I have not graded all of them yet but they range in book value from 13-25 dollars each.

Silver Certificates in order to be worth more than their face value should look like this: Like right off the press to be worth anything.

PLUS it's a STAR note (pretty rare), meaning it replaced one taken out of circulation because it was too damaged for public use.

I've been collecting coins for a long time until they were stolen.

However in the past 5 or 6 years I've been saving & looking thru my change. All American coins.

I've been googling the value of my coins & a majority of them are worth much more than their face value.

Is this just wishful thinking...or are they worth what the internet says?

For instance I have a 1969 D penny in really great condition.

Says it's worth like $12 or such...

I have over $500 in US change. Canadian banks won’t give exchange on them. Only accept the coins at par. Between 25%-30% discount. Fuck that noise.
 Quoting: Jack Eye

Save the nickels!
They are 70% nickel.

The market is being artificially suppressed and they’re easily worth twice the denominated value

I have an obscene pile of pre 1980, not wheat pennies.
Many hundreds of pounds.

When two years ago they claimed there’s a “national coin shortage” I went to the credit union and got $100 worth of nickels and put them next to the pennies in the basement.

Curiously- the federal reserve is NOT responsible for the coinage- only paper money..
Keep that in mind.

I got really excited by getting a Canuck 1940 nickel! It's worth is about $2.00 really...got it in my change after buying a bottle of wine!

there's a guy here always picking up or dropping off numerous small but heavy boxes at post office. one day my wife asked him what he does and he says he buys and sells pennies. claims he does quite well with it. i guess "quite well" is a relative term as it looks like a hell of a lot of work sorting through and cherry picking out the the best pennies to re-sell on eBay. To each his own I guess; bless his heart.

What do you think coinstar machines are doing?
I know a friend of a friend who used to run those coin redemption machines and they have a mechanism that separates the copper pennies from the post ‘82 zinc.
He had 55 gallon drums of copper and nickel.
HDPE drums..

I just find gold in a bag of jewelry at a thrift store for a few bucks. Last time I made 600 on a gold chain that I got for eight bucks. Magnets do not pick up gold nor silver. 18 Karat acid tests silver. Buy the acid on Amazon.

I rarely make money, because I don’t often sell. But I follow this strategy too!
I buy all the bulk bags of jewelry I see if the price is right and I get a good feeling.
I already said it, but I always check old pins, pens and glasses because a lot are gold filled. I have a big jar of gold filled scrap, I’m just looking for shop space to refine.

Get a decent metal detector and the oldest map of your area. Search around old bars and stores. Also old outhouses (coins fall out of pockets). My cousin does very well at this.

Excellent strategy, but there’s a lot more to it in most cases.
Getting permission is usually the hardest part.
And days of work may yield very little
I live right near the old road from Albany to Utica, NY.
There’s so many strange OLD sites along that road..

Also old, well established jewelry districts in cities- gold falls in all the cracks and stays put. There is gold in the sidewalk cracks on 5th avenue in Manhattan. From years of jewelers getting gold dust in their clothes and such..

Several seasons I’ve gone to large, high traffic parking lots in the spring as the snow melts (or right now this year) and scan for shiny objects. Dropped jewelry is hard to find in the snow.. I have found a few gold rings and earrings over the years this way.
I’ve also considered digging up snowplow sludge from huge snow banks and water sluicing it.

People loose rings when it is very cold.
It’s hard to feel it side off your hand when it’s frozen.

Yep

When you handle it enough you develop a “know” for what is gold
