Re: Polish Homeowners Line Up For Days To Buy Coal Ahead Of Winter
In July, Poland ordered two state-controlled companies to import several million tons of the fuel from other sources including Indonesia, Colombia and Africa, and introduced subsidies for homeowners facing a doubling or tripling of coal prices from last winter.

"As much as 60% of those that use coal for heating may be affected by energy poverty," Horbacz said.

Back at Bogdanka, Piotr Maciejewski, 61, a local farmer who joined the queue on Tuesday, said he was prepared for a long wait. "My tractor stays in line, I'm going home to get some sleep," he said.

According to Reuters, with Poland still basking in the late summer heat, hundreds of cars and trucks have already lined up at the Lubelski Wegiel Bogdanka coal mine, as householders fearful of winter shortages wait for days and nights to stock up on heating fuel ahead of the coming cold winter in queues reminiscent of communist times.

Coal is used to heat Kachelofen - tile heaters in rooms.

the finest heat in the world. The tile emanates a slow and steady warmth without the dry air of forced air furnaces.

the ovens can be very plain or use highly decorated tiles. I bet Poland has some lovely ones

Re: Polish Homeowners Line Up For Days To Buy Coal Ahead Of Winter
Poland has tons of coal and active coal mines, there is no shortage, dont be fooled, this is not what is going on

Their GOV gave them about $600 per family who use coal for heating

The coal companies then increased the price for per ton of coal by $600

Then families divorced on paper and demanded two family payouts under one roof, some buildings have 20 families and one furnace

Now they all running for coal to store away like squarals

Well, yes and no.

Weve got coal, but thanks to commie EU weve been investing close to nothing in the development of new deposits, exploration etc... Btw, we apparently have the biggest titanium deposit in Europe, but nothing is being done with it. Oh and huge brown coal deposits, but you know, we need to reduce CO2 so that our plants starve etc... Stupid shit.

I feel sad that people in today still have to take coal home to stay warm.
 Quoting: Deplorable Fascist Xeven

My dad was born in 1920.

Told me that after they moved off the farm (where they heated with wood), they would remove the back seat of their Ford car, whatever it was back then. and FILL the back of the vehicle with coal for the house. Loose coal. Not in bags. Just bulk coal loaded in the back of the car. Then they would shovel it into the basement of the house through the coal chute.

FUN!

When I visited Western CHina a couple years (business trip) after Nixon's famous visit, the air hung heavy with coal dust and the sulfur from little coal fires everywhere that the people cooked with in their small hovels. The coal was in these little hex shapes, like they were pressed in a mold or something. It had a hole in the center, that looked like a hex shaped hockey puck, only larger. Each hovel or whatever you call it, had a little cooker thing sitting on the floor that they cooked on.

And the scooters were all bicycles with those cheap little bolt on engines on them. Burning some crappy fuel that gave off a greenish smoke. They worked though, so there were millions of Chinese riding these little bikes all over the place. I suppose I would not recognize the country now, but they did not have much of a standard of living back then.

I was young and stupider back then. The president of the Steel mill would explain that he got paid the same as the guy sweeping the sidewalk out front. $300 a year, plus a can of cookiing oil and a bag of rice per month. And some eggs.
Of course being an important man, he was also given a car and a driver, and probably other perks.

He was constantly asking me questions about the west and then he would point out with pride their store that sold tiny washing machines and their 1 gear bicycles that were built like a tank. He asked me what I thought of their bicycles and like an idiot I told him what I thought.
That they were single gear and very heavy, while Western biks had multiple gears for the hills, and were a great deal much lighter, and had efficient thin, high pressure tires. I could see that I wounded his ego, and stupidly added, "Well, your roads are rougher, so a stronger bicycle is probably a good thing for endurance. Boy did he get pissed off!
I didn't mean any disrespect and was too you to have learned how to lie to protect people's feelings.

Having a science education, I was basically a human computer back then. Dealing with people's emotions was something quite beyond my experience.

But it seems he ended up valuing my honesty. The plant was built there and I was invited to a wonderful ceremonial dinner at the Emperor's summer palace. A restaurant on a little island in a little placid lake, surrounded by various flowering plants and trees like something out of Disneyland.
Beautiful server girls ushered us in and I was the guest of honor, that had to link arms and drink with everyone there this pure jet fuel out of a metal can that they kept filling my shot glass with. (It was about half the size of a shot glass).

A good people, and very smart, dedicated, artistic, philosophical, etc. But they have been subjugated by an evil regime. I hope they (and we) can have a decent government at some point in the future.

Re: Polish Homeowners Line Up For Days To Buy Coal Ahead Of Winter
I’m pretty old but grew up in a farmhouse with a coal furnace. This house had a coal room with a small window that when the coal truck came they would stick a chute through the window and fill the room with coal. Now this room was prob atleast 8x10x8. There was another small door to the inside where you could shovel out the coal onto the furnace.

So, I don’t understand what people with tiny cars are rally gonna get in that line. It ain’t a winter supply of coal unless it’s for a barbecue.

Depends on the car. If they remove the back seat, they might get 500-800 lbs of coal in there. Maybe they put a tarp down first to protect the vehicle.

Make 3 or 4 trips. Better than nothing I guess.

That’s what I’m thinking, multiple trips, multiple cars, very tiny heating device? Coal is quite dirty it always turned our snow black with soot. I predict a cold, dirty winter interspersed with fires in Poland. Sad.

Nuke plants work and can be made safe. WTF is wrong with humanity? The energy solution has been around for nearly 70 years.

China about to finish first safer Thorium reactor.

[link to www.world-nuclear-news.org (secure)]

As this type of reactor does not require water for cooling, it will be able to operate in desert regions. The Chinese government has plans to build more across the sparsely populated deserts and plains of western China, complementing wind and solar plants and reducing China's reliance on coal-fired power stations. The reactor may also be built outside China in Belt and Road Initiative nations.
 Quoting: Deplorable Fascist Xeven

Oh yeah? What do you do with the spent fuel rods other than store them out back in cooling ponds for eternity.

Just like the future of EV batteries there is no way to safely dispose of the byproduct of these two forms of energy.
