According to the article, there was another rope attached to a tree that failed. Apparently it was more of a freefall rope stunt than a bungee cord. The other rope was supposed to limit her swing.

It's not funny, it's terrifyingly tragic but what's done cannot be undone. I'm sure her friends and family are devastated. Sad.

I did that in about 1990, it was a new thing at the time. My class was on a field trip, I told my classmates that I will do it if they pay for it. They did. So I did. And the guy running the thing said the rope can carry 1500kg. My body weight at the time was around 80kg, so I figured it's ok.

Only later in high school I learned that 80kg multiplied by the acceleration 9.81m/s2, over the duration of the flight of 1.5-2.0 seconds, my body weight on pull-back was around that mark.
