Cat Friends. I need help
Fellow cat lovers, please help!

I have a fellow who suffers with UTI's. Or rather build-up on crystals in his bladder which precipitates frequent visits to the vet to "blast" the crystals and IV's and anti-biotics to get him on his paws again.

In the past 10 months, I guess there've been 4 or 5 visits to the vet....some of them for DAYS of overnight stays, etc.

Usually, he doesn't get the build-up of crystals before several months' time, like 8 months apart. Here lately, he's falling victim about every 6 WEEKS.

In all truth, I simply can't afford to continue at this pace, as each visit sets me back hundreds, IF NOT THOUSANDS of $$$. I know it's foolish. And probably stupid. But if you love your cat friends, you understand.

This post is a plea for help with this guy. If I can't find something to help prevent the build-up of crystals homeopathically, I'm afraid the next visit to the vet is going to be his last, as I simply cannot afford to keep this up.

We had to go ALL LAST WEEK-END with a broken air conditioner because he'd just been to the vet and I was tapped out when our air conditioner just quit working and I'd just paid the rent after the vet bill.

So, as I say, unless some of my favorite cat friends (you know who you are!) can give me some expert advice on what might help this poor guy out without costing me an arm and a leg, I'm afraid his days are now numbered. I suspect he's ALREADY blocking up (in 2 weeks' time), as he's doing all the suspect behavior he does when he gets them....hiding, peeing all over the place (instead of cat box), etc.

Please help if you can.
Any advice will be considered. Just to add: he's already been put on prescription food (c/d didn't work, now on Canin) - and I HATE them both, but he seems to like the Canin, although it doesn't seem to be helping either.

But I WILL NOT SUFFER FOOLS. If you come onto my thread and start giving me "cat soup recipes" and other such foolishness, YOU WILL BE GONE. No warnings. I am in no mood for that stupidity.

I'm just trying to find a way to save my precious boy's life. He's a very sweet, kind, loving fur kitty. But ultimately, he's "just a cat," and I will do what I need to rather than have him continuously suffer with this if need be.

P.S. We've been told about the "surgery" that should help, but I'm not sure I want to spend yet ANOTHER $2k for that....

Re: Cat Friends. I need help
I had a cat with the same exact problem.

Is your cat overweight? If it is, that's one of the main problems.

What it helped mine was changing the diet to one time a day or twice in small proportions.
The "specialized" food for UTI is a vile lie. I changed to the cheaper ones that are regular or raw chicken along with catnip.
I changed her bowl to a higher level where she stands instead of sitting, and to a stainless steel one (less dirty water due to plastics)
And last, the litter being clean right away after doing her business.

It only took me like three months. That cat when was adopted had the worst pee smell and poo. From 26 pounds went down to 12 pounds and was finally cleaning herself when before she didn't even had the motivation to do so.

Well, as strange as it sounds to write this, partly it's HIS OWN FAULT, as he WILL NOT eat canned food (which is supposedly better for them). Only dry food. SO twice now vets have said to give him this prescription (dry) food. OK, so I bought both types. He eats it, but it doesn't seem to be preventing the formation of the crystals. SO, idk.

Re: Cat Friends. I need help
I had a cat with this problem years ago, and emergency surgery was the only thing that worked. Yeah it was a lot of money (that I had to borrow), but he was so bad and in so much pain it was either do the surgery or put him down that day.

He lived several more years after that without urinary issues. I did need to feed him a decent amount of wet food and encourage him to drink water, but he never got blocked again.

If you've tried the wet food diet, increasing water intake, etc. and none of that worked, and you don't want your poor cat to suffer more (but aren't ready to put him down either), surgery is your only option. Good luck OP, I know it's a tough position to be in.

This is usually caused by fish meal in the cat food. That's all I know, we never buy cat food with fish meal listed as an ingredient.

The Rx food should be helping.

Are you sure that's all he's eating? Are you feeding dry food? Is the neighbor feeding him CRAP.

Even cheap treats will do it in some cats - like Temptations etc.

Another thing that has way too many minerals for cats with this issue is bone broth. No bone broth.

Ask your vet about Purina Hydracare. It's a gravy-type supplement for hydration. My guys Love it!

I appreciate the ideas, but there are several issues here.

First, no, he's not overweight. He's only 8 years old, in quite good shape.

Second, it's hard to only feed at a special time due to work schedules. Also, we have several cats and they mostly "free feed" which means we leave food out all the time and they graze.

Next, we only use stainless steel bowls, both for the food and water.

I just got a couple of those "stands" where the food is above the ground slightly, so maybe?

We probably COULD do a better job of cleaning the litter boxes out, but with so many cats, I fear it would be a full-time job! When he's well, he doesn't seem to mind using it any time at all, but when he's getting the crystals....it's almost as if he's telling us he has them by NOT using the box!

My parents have the same issue with their Silver Persian. When he gets a uti he pees on everything (i mean everything. The couch, carpet, people.) They put some silver drops in his water and it seems to decrease the time in between episodes. I think they do 8-10 drop of the 500ppm silver in a medium sized bowl of water.

The vet gave them some antibiotics just to have when he starts going crazy

Cats aren't designed to eat carb-rich kibbles. Feed this cat chopped meat, ground beef, fish packed in water. Foods with plant materials will injure his kidneys by spiking insulin and they also have oxalates, phytates, and toxic lectins

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80755157

This! I don't go to vets unless it's to fix a rescue animal..I'm broke too and under threat of eviction...you can rid kitty of the infection by giving him collidial silver..if you can't afford that, you can make your own nano silver water ...with a genuine silver coin ( like a peace coin that's 80 percent silver ) or silver piece and distilled water..boil the coin in distilled water 20 minutes and let cool. Administer in a dropper a few drops throughout the day..it cures infection. Also, you can get fish antibiotics online...you want amoxicillin ... Walmart pet rx com had them and budk catalog and camping places ..nut soon we won't be able to get them anymore beginning February...they are the same as prescription...I mix a tad in with tuna juice after I've opened the capsule and put it mixed up in a dropper and give it to sick kitty three times daily. I don't know what to say about those crystals..but I hope this info helps. I'm an herbalist and I study alternative medicine. Of you're keeping pets up to date on vaccinations, don't bother. They are killing pets earlier and earlier. I've watched it progress decades. Then I lost all faith in vets when they killed my kitty by gross negligence. It's all about profits. Good luck to you. Oh, look up the coin and date if you are wondering if it's real silver or not. Older coins are...they are also made of zinc and copper.

No, I'm NOT sure that's all he's eating. There are several cats and there are several cat foods out. I have tried to get rid of the treats (Temptations specifically). We had an elderly cat who just recent died and she was ONLY subsisting on that, so I bought it for her, but then they all loved it, so now I am trying to get it all gone. They all love them and it doesn't affect the others, so I try to sneak them for them when he's sleeping! I guess if there's any left after they finish, if he wakes up, he could be getting to them.

He's an indoor cat, so the only food he gets is from me, so if he's continually getting sick, it's my fault. That's why I feel I've got to try to fix his diet for him to survive.

"The Rx food should be helping.

Are you sure that's all he's eating?"

These 2 comments hit me between the eyes. When he first came home from the vet, we confined him to a crate - the kind you'd put a dog in....very big crate. He had ONLY the prescription food and we monitored him. He did very well. After the meds were all gone, we let him out into the general population and WITHIN 3 DAYS, it seemed like he'd quit using the litter box again and started having issues. I had THOUGHT he was still only eating his food as I'd seen him eating it, but maybe he was eating the others' food (NOT bad treats, but certainly not the Rx stuff).

Raw diet > Wet food > Dry food

Cats are not supposed to drink water, their ancestors were desert creatures.

Cats who eat raw food do not drink, as they get their water from the food they eat.

The average house cat drinks water because it is dehydrated due to improper diet.

All big pet food companies are just part of the same industrial military complex, and they do not want your cat to be healthy as they're in bed with big pharma. Same con as always.

This.

You must limit or eliminate the dry "grazing".

If you can't, you must use the Rx dry, but just for snacks - not meals.

I get it - I have a guy addicted to dry. He will go for that even if he has a plate of warm fresh baked chicken next to it. I call him my crunchoholic.

But even he adjusted to minimal crunch after a while.

Another thing that helped is a slow feeder bowl.

It slows them down and he can't stuff his face with crunch.

Re: Cat Friends. I need help
You need prescription food, slowly add the new food into the old food till your completely feeding the prescription food. No fish meal no fish seafood tuna etc.
Venison is a good dry food to feed cats if you can’t afford a prescription diet.
Does he go outside? If he doesn’t grow some wheat grass for him to chew on.
Feed store would probably give you a handful of wheat seed.

Is he neutered..if not get him fixed! A unfixed male cat is more prone to UTIs then a neutered cat. When I worked for the vet it was so common in un neutered cats.

Another thing is water intake. Fresh water everyday if you don’t have a fountain waterer make one or buy one. The reason they advise canned food is because of the liquid content. Hydrate hydrate hydrate.

i have two cats and use two bowls of water in different locations. one is a bubbler water and one is a regular bowl. I have two litter boxes one for each cat you should have three if you have three cats. The boxes can be in the same room.
Try changing to a natural litter, stall pine pellets, corn cob or such.
EDIT. The kitty litter box suggestion is not something I learned from the vet I was working at. But if one cat is not allowing a cat to use the box holding in the pee could be causing it. That was just me thinking out loud.

Hydration is what I learned at the vet and the venison.

Re: Cat Friends. I need help
It's a metabolic disease like diabetes. It probably is diabetes. It isn't an infection. So the treatment is dietary change.

Yea man what are you feeding him? Something has to be causing this.

SO, idk.

Yes I have a friend with the exact same problem. The cat loves to eat dry food. What my friends have done is only provide her with dry food on rare occasions. This seems to have cleared up the problem.

If your cat gets hungry enough it will eat the wet food. You may have to put up with some annoying meowing for a while but it is worth it. Better than spending all your money on vet bills.
