The Mystery of John Titor: Hoax or Time Traveler?
A person named "John Titor" started posting on the Internet one day, claiming to be from the future and predicting the end of the world. Then he suddenly disappeared, never to be heard from again.

A poster going by the screennames “TimeTravel_0” and “John Titor” on a variety of message boards, beginning with the forum at the Time Travel Institute, claimed he was a soldier sent from 2036, the year the computer virus wiped the world. His mission was to head back to 1975 in order to snatch-and-grab an IBM 5100 computer, which had the necessary equipment to fight the future virus. (His detour to the year 2000 was simply to get a little R&R while visiting his three-year-old self, ignoring every fabric-of-time paradox rule from time-travel stories.) Over the next four months, Titor responded to every question other posters had, describing future events in poetically-phrased ways, always submitted with a general disclaimer that alternate realities do exist, so his reality may not be our own. In between dire urgings to learn first aid and stop eating beef—Mad Cow was a serious threat in his reality—Titor provided a number of technical specs regarding how time travel worked, with overly complex algorithms and grainy, hard-to-make-out photos of his actual machine. (Which, yes, of course, was an automobile: a 1987 Chevy Suburban.) He even showed off his cool futuristic military insignia.

On March 24, 2001, Titor offered his final piece of advice (“Bring a gas can with you when the car dies on the side of the road”), signed off forever, and returned home. He was never heard from again.

In 1998, Art Bell, host of the late-night, paranormal-themed radio show Coast to Coast AM, which attracted eccentrics from all over the country pushing tales of alien abduction, freaky physics, and more. During one of his "Open Time Lines" segments, in which anyone could dial in with their own stories, Bell read a letter from a man claiming to be from the future -- which naturally came in by fax.

The unknown time traveler described a Y2K disaster that would leave people frozen to death, a government instituting martial law, a power facility in Denver destroyed by a mob, and a communal government system sprouting out of the chaos. Naturally, he sent an immediate follow-up fax, which Bell also read on air.

n January 2001, Time_Traveler_0 -- now going by the name "John Titor" -- made his first post on the Art Bell forums, the online counterpart to Coast to Coast. It was an exact duplicate of the November 2 post from the Time Travel Institute forums. He eventually migrated permanently to the Art Bell forums, where he would post regularly until March of 2001.

Let me explain, Mr. Bell. I sent a fax with this opening on July 29 1998. As I said then I am a time traveler. I have been on this world line since April of this year and I plan to leave soon. Typically time travelers do not purposely affect the world lines they visit. However this mission is unusually long and I've grown attached to some of the people I have met here.

Titor is absent until 2000, when someone with a similar background begins posting under the username TimeTravel_0 on the Time Travel Institute Forum with a story similar to the faxes Bell received in 1998. The name John Titor is not used until January 27, 2001, when an individual posts on an Art Bell BBS Forums opening up to others about his life as a time traveler and inviting questions:

Posted by John Titor on 01-27-2001 12:45 PM. Greetings. I am a time traveler from the year 2036. I am on my way home after getting an IBM 5100 computer system from the year 1975. My "time" machine is a stationary mass, temporal displacement unit manufactured by General Electric. The unit is powered by two, top-spin, dual-positive singularities that produce a standard, off-set Tipler sinusoid. I will be happy to post pictures of the unit.

Titor admits he lives in a parallel timeline, one that varies 1-2% from ours. Enough to be slightly different, but not diverge from the major societal events. Titor is on a mission to obtain an IBM 5100 in order to debug computers in 2036 due predicted problems with Unix in 2038. The IBM 5100 emulates APL and BASIC programming languages, an interesting feature. John also posts pictures of his time travel machine along with schematics and the logo used by his military unit.

He had traveled to Rochester, back to 1975, to get the IBM 5100 portable computer. The 5100, Titor said, was needed to "debug various legacy code computer programs" in 2036. Here's something: It turns out the 5100 did have a unique feature -- an interface -- inside.

He then time traveled forward to Rochester in the year 2000 to check in on family. Grandparents. Even though he hadn't been born yet.

"Greetings," Titor wrote in November of 2000 on an obscure site called the Time Travel Institute Forum. "I am a time traveler from the year 2036."

Over the next four months, Titor described life in 2036. Gave us a glimpse into our future.

Titor's 570 or so Internet posts would describe an upcoming "civil conflict over a U.S. presidential election." Warn us about Mad Cow Disease. Tell us about nuclear war with Russia.

Titor Technically Predicted The Iraq War
Titor reportedly predicted the Iraq War. The strangest thing is that he specifically mentioned weapons of mass destruction - and the deception surrounding them - before they were brought to national attention. Titor allegedly wrote: "None of the things I have said will be a surprise. They were set in motion ten, twenty, even thirty years ago. Are you really surprised to find out that Iraq has nukes now or is that just BS to whip everyone up into accepting the next war?"

It's entirely possible that this prediction was nothing more than someone with the foresight to take contemporary views on foreign policy to the logical extreme, but can we truly be certain?

Another early claim of Titor's was that CERN would discover time travel, or the basis of time travel, in 2001. According to public knowledge, this didn't occur. However, CERN did discover the Higgs boson in 2012 - what if that discovery ends up being the basis for time travel technology?

And if we have an EMP or another Carrington Event, the electrical grid would be destroyed with decades required to restore it, so there would be no charging of that electric vehicle.

Gas vehicles would become a necessity.
