That's my understanding of how castle doctrine works in Michigan, a woman that I worked with was going through a divorce with an abusive husband. The Friend of the Court advised her to get a firearm and only shoot if the body would drop inside the home. If he fell outside, drag him in before dialing 911.

Some states allow the use of deadly force to protect property, I believe North Carolina is/was one. At the time when I left NC there was a case going through the courts about a homeowner who shot a hooligan on Halloween, killing the teen. The homeowner may have had a criminal defense but he was certainly facing a civil case.
