Track Number 8, "Nothing Feels Right" Featuring Zakk Wylde

Okay, it's like they're trying to write the same song over and over again.

Acoustic, Airy intro gives way to Anthemic chorus and Zakk sounds amazing with his new found Iommi tone.

There are elements here that remind me of a few different tracks from "Ordinary Man" which was put together by the same team. Notably, a strong resemblance to "Scary Little Green Men" which I love, but this is a whole different pace.

Spoiler: This is my favorite track on this album.

The chorus is amazing and lyrically relatable there's a section of the chours that gives way to a Gallopy refrain and then, at 3:12 we are treated to this...

This is where I die. I can rest now.

LISTEN TO THAT TONE.

Recognize it?

That's "Paranoid" era Iommi tone masterfully reproduced with a riff that deserves it. This time-travelling attack on my feels is everything I've ever wanted. It's my favorite Iommi tone and I always wondered why it was left behind in 1972 forever. The riff is Iron Manny.

It pounds it's way underneath the solo. Again, very impressed by Zakk Wylde's new restraint.

Anthemic Chorus where Ozzy reaches high and nails it.

This track has it all.

9.5

Best Ozzy solo track since "Perry Mason"

Track Number 9, "Evil Shuffle" Featuring Zakk Wylde

Instantly reminds you of "Straight to Hell" from previous album. Has a bit more swagger here, it's an improvement.

I don't know enough to tell you if this is a legit "Shuffle" in musical terms but it sure does swing and swagger, so it must be something about the time signature.

Mid-Section is warped and cool.

I like it, but in light of the other monsters on this album, this track seems a bit lackluster.

Track Number 10, "Degradation Rules" Featuring TONY FUCKING IOMMI, thank you very much!

Very surprised by this songs subject matter.

Ozzy denounces Porn/Masturbation addiction.

I'm not mad at it, just a little perplexed.

Odd way to spend what could be the last 2 tracks we'll ever hear with 2 original Black Sabbath founders.

Harmonica in the intro trying to summon a little "Wizard" feel but it's out of place.

Iommi delivers epic riffs like you'd expect, no disappointment there.

Like many tracks on "13" it's solid but not blowing me away.

7.25

Track Number 11, "Dead and Gone"

This track features neither Tony Iommi or Zakk Wylde and yet it feels like either or both of them are here in spirit. I'm getting that Iommi tone again, not so obvious here, but enough to evoke. I'm also getting a sneaky Zakk Pinch Harmonic here and there.

Def Leppard "High and Dry" spacey/Airy opening which again, I love, a touch of "No More Tears" guitar fill, catchy and hooky chorus with bluesy resolution.

The least interesting tracks on this album benefit greatly from being ACTUAL SONGS that mean something versus stupid throwaway shit nobody will ever hear twice. I haven't made too many notes about lyrical content but there's no ridiculous content here, it's all kind of relatable in that classic introspective Sabbath kind of way.

There's been no track on this album that I would feel compelled to skip and the only thing preventing it from being a perfect album is the flow...

Too many times one song begins and sounds like the song you just heard.

But this track lands at a respectable 7.25

Track Number 12, "God Only Knows"

Very different sound on this one. Buzzy kind of guitar tone introduces a heavy, melancholy ballad.

Ozzy kind of barks this one out. Not his best moment on this track which puts him out front without much support for most of it.

Otherwise a fine "Ozzy Ballad (TM)" which could've been on "Down to Earth" nicely.

Track 13, "Darkside Blues"

Planet Caravan meets Led Zeppelin's "Bring It On Home" intro for a very brief album outro like "Blow On the Jug" except you can hear it.

It's just a bit of fun, no rating given.

Re: Ozzy - Patient Number Nine - My Album Review
This album has no less than 5 GREAT tracks that will be on my rotation indefinitely.

Though the album average is a 7.8, that's about on-par with any given Ozzy solo album including the RR offerings.

This album improves on the work done on "Ordinary Man" and I hope we get more from this team before the inevitable.

I was just 13 years old when I first heard Black Sabbath in 1985 on the back of the bus to Jr. High.

Nobody liked Black Sabbath, then, they were gone, passe, washed up, making shitty albums (according to most) with no-names and has-beens, their stars moving on to rock radio friendly solo careers.

But I held on and shouted from the rooftops to anyone who would listen and it's amazing to me that now, in 2022...Ozzy and Sabbath are venerated and appreciated the way they always should've been.

Ozzy does not tarnish his legacy here. He expands it, it grows, and whether it's fake or not...I love it and keep doing it.

And next time, give Geezer and Bill a call, okay?

I give the album a Masterful 8.9

Re: Ozzy - Patient Number Nine - My Album Review
We have a lot to get through, up-front. Say the name "Ozzy" and a million different ideas of who and what Ozzy was, could be and is in 2022 will be offered. Many of these offerings will be laced with negativity and I think they need to be addressed and handled before any competent review can be made.

Ozzy is 73 and cannot sing anymore, therefore his vocals are (varying degrees of) fake.

I hear you, I feel you, and your conclusion is hard to escape. However, for those of us who crave Ozzy, we MUST simply accept that this is the only way we will ever get "More" whether it's AI generated, heavily produced, or otherwise.

If you cannot look past it, nothing will encourage you to give this album a fair evaluation.

Ozzy does not write his own material, therefore there's no personal connection to the words and/or he's just spewing out generic "I'm so Dark" content others have written for him.

First of all, he's almost never written anything except vocal melody. A couple of Sabbath songs that are credited to him as his sole lyrical creation are not bad, but nowhere near as good as Geezer Butler's.

Secondly, "Generic Dark" was a rough period that Ozzy went through after Ozzmosis in 1995 and didn't end until the Black Sabbath reunion album "13". I agree with your assessment for that period, and I might add that certain other eras of Ozzy's solo career were very "Cartoonish" and adolescent. Highly regarded eras.

Nothing can ever replace Randy Rhoades.

If you haven't moved on from RR, you are an NPC who just emos whenever there's any opportunity. RR was great, but honestly I don't prefer him to Iommi or Wylde.

I think that covers everything broad a person can say about Ozzy and his solo career. If your mind is still open to Ozzy and you crave new material, please proceed.

I'm 73 and can sing better than I ever did, a lot better. But, I haven't been screaming my lungs-out for fifty years....

Yeah, use and abuse takes its toll.

Just the smoke inhalation alone whether your own or second hand...devastating.

Nothing beats Jake's playing in Bark at the Moon.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80289823

BatM is a pretty awesome jam, and though Jake is a shredder, he shows a bit of restraint in service to the tune which Randy, IMO, just didn't, especially live where every other note was a flourish and irritating.
 Quoting: The_Meridian

I think you are confusing Jake with Zakk's pathetic attempts at playing bark at the moon live. where is inserts a pinch harmonic every 5 seconds.
