Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
I have a couple of collectible custom knives. Just never use them. Too valuable. Fallkniven, Randall, Chris Reeve, and other top tier blades are just worth the bigtime extra money to me.

Have thought about a Mora Granberg with full tang, but...

Bark River Knives are pretty widely acclaimed for performance at the bottom price rung of the Top Tier. There are just so many fine knifemakers now. TOPS is just an incredible resource for varied designs.

Most of the CS knives I had were replaced with Ontario models. The SP53 bolo type blade, SP5 standard Bowie, their Kukri. All excellent value. Went with the Esee Junglas over the large RAT. Becker-KaBar are very high quality basic knives.

Probably all the carbon steel knives with thick coatings would cost lots more, but using the coating, the mfrs don't have to polish and prep the blade as they would otherwise. The coating can be applied to finish quality over a blade that has many irregularities. Cheaper to spray than grind and polish.

I have a Spyderco Para 3…that black DLC on that blade is some tough shit.

I’m usually not a fan of coated blades

I just recieved the Mora Granberg and Mora S. Dont like cases but will be in bag pocket. Dont like it cant be a stabby knife.

Should be ok though. Not mega costly as a bob storage but maybe cheaped out on knives.

Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
I ran the gamut.....started collecting knives in the early 80's starting with a Randall I carried serving with the 82nd Abn Div....bought over 200 blades since.....many are safe queens like a large number of South Africa made Chris Reeves....they appreciated greatly in value with the large fan boi crowd...

But the knife I use 80% of the time is one I made myself.....5160 steel....it fits my needs and my hand.....stock removal grinding, hardened, and grips made in my shop.....nothing fancy but it's literally made for me.....basically a slightly modified Kephart pattern utility blade with maple handle from a tree on my property.....

My favorite folder is a Spyderco XL Manix 2.....Benchmade Griptilian running a close 2nd....

Like to watch videos?

Two YT guys come to mind with application to this thread...

Chris at preparedmind101 has been making vids for 10-15yrs. Most of his vids are knife reviews, tests etc. He likes to customize his knives and usually orders custom Kydex sheaths for the keepers. A definite fanboy of Bark River and other upscale makers.

David at reallybigmonkey1 been making bushcraft-camping videos for about 15yrs. He is very into machetes of the thick, big knife sort. Has about 30 or more lg knife machetes, parangs, Kukris etc. Lot of good camping videos.

Lots of others, but these 2 guys use big knives-choppers a lot and also bushcrafting knives.

For my situation, living in a place where it can be -50F for overnite lows by November, and where animals harvested run 1000 lbs or much more; there's not going to be many longterm bushcrafting applications for my knives. Better have steel tent stakes and a tent w/liner and good barrelstove.

Not many going to make it through any survival situation up here. Better have a knife that is one helluva chopper and edge durable steel. There is no food to be scrounged in the woods unless you find a moose. Kill a moose, you have a chance. Better have about 5 ways to make a fire on your person, and a way to keep warm once you get warm. Everybody's locale has its own peculiarities and dangers.

Martin & Mickey, the DBK boys...

I enjoy their videos. saw their review of the Woodsman's Pal yesterday. They have done several good vids of new and cheap Mora beater knives. One by Terrava, another by Condor and probably some I'm forgetting. $30 indestructible knife with good steel and grind.

The pukko by Benchmade is supposed to be really excellent.

Seems cool. People do fish with it. Obviously in streams etc. Or bridge, bank. Just enquiring about reel etc. Whether glove is cool with arm brace slingshot. I sorted the tubes for slingshot. So found the method for making tubes/pouches. Slingshot uses a flip clip x system for switching out tubes. Another system would just be hoops for the frame and tube attachement. Dont buy a tube setup sling that uses an ammo to hold tube to frame. You would have to carry rubbing alcohol. Even then its the ultimate in constipation removal and hand blisters.

Probably dont matter if you cant use brace with fishing glove. The tubes for fishing wont be like tubes for ammo. Although Id make my own as have spare tube. I think you might be able to fire hex nuts. Easier to find. If you run out of ammo.

The pouch ties.

Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
I found a copy of the original Bushcrafting paperback, about 25yrs ago at a resale. Very cool ideas and illustrations. Kept in a bug out pouch with other small stuff. Good tinder if nothing else...

One thing I decided to include in my outback gear is a couple of boring bits for hole and peg construction. All the BS in bushcrafting projects with notching and tied together construction is solved if you have a 1/2" or 3/4" boring bit. Could probably use hole-saw of 4" or longer and make your pegs, but I'd bet can find sappling or tree branch that will fit. You've made a wooden club for battoning, eh? Use that to drive your tight-fitting peg into your precision drilled hole.

Even have some portability in that could dismantle your assembly and move it somewhere else.

I found a nice set of boring bits with a 3/8 or 1/2" shank to fit a drive socket. These bits just eat up whatever their drilled into, cut a nice clean hole without binding. Not as difficult to bore a hole in green wood as it is with dry. Green peg goes into green wood; it's not coming out easily.

By carrying some basic tools, beyond jute & paracord, you can create much more durable shelters and furniture etc.

The Leatherman etc tools with adapters for 1/4 drive sockets and bits are compact and versatile. DeWalt has accessory sets with 1/4" socket fitting drills. These are pretty lightweight and small diameter, but even a notched joint with a threaded nylon cord will hold better than one not drilled. Uses much less cordage too.

Dont like the handle but for fighting you do backhand stabs. Might be ok to use thumb to not cause slip. A semi sword or sword type handle might be better. Kind of glad I didnt spend 100s.

Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
I owned a stainless Cold Steel Trailmaster, with the convex grind I just never used it. I did use my Gerber Australian Bowie; no worries about resharpening that one, though never needed to. Used it to filet some salmon, nothing much else. The CS Recon Scout was very cool, but never really used either.

The Victorinox Super Tinker was my EDC for many years. Great Knife for almost any need. Scissors, the saw works great on plastic pipe and wood, the file came in handy, small & lg blades, plus the great Phillips driver on bottom so could use as a T handle. Lost that one doing something on a truck.

I have long thought that the original Chicago Cutlery walnut handled kitchen knives made excellent survival knives. Paring knives, Chef's, and 6" Slicers. Small knives are usually overlooked, but they have great versatility.

Over the years, have found a number of excellent knives at resale shops. Usually about $3 bucks. The older Chicago Cutlery knives turn up pretty often, along with good euro name brands.

For Survival purposes, I also own several folding pocket saws, a Sven Saw and knock-off copy, plus a couple 12" Bow-Hacks that take Swedish and hacksaw blades. The diamond hacksaw blades are very useful. Never thought of using the Swedish blades on a regular hacksaw; might be more compact solution.

Then there are Axes and 30/36" bow saws. Chainsaws are so much faster...

The orig WorkSharp electric sharpener is very versatile, and cheap. No more worries about how to sharpen a convex grind.

Knives of all types are probably one of the most critical survival tools in our house. Always looking for more knives...

Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
For fishing etc, a good long pole with a frog gig fastened would be about as practical as the slingshot gizmo.

Wham-O used to sell a slingshot in the 60s, wooden frame with surgical tubing etc. They included a metal frame that fit into drilled holes atop the slingshot so you could launch Arrows. the frame thing was an arrow rest or sorts.

As a kid, my friend and I tried bowfishing. Got a special reel to attach to a bow above the handgrip and went hunting. Never had any success but the problem was finding a fish at rest near top of the water.

Salmon often are at-rest when coming upstream to spawn. A good frog gig on a long pole would be the ticket. Maybe you adapt some kind of single blade with a barb or something like a gut hook on the end? Keep your fish stuck while you bring it in...

1095 is good all around steel for survival purposes and easy to sharpen; however, I prefer something that holds its edge better. 20CV or S90V. S30V if you want something that holds its edge well but easier to sharpen.

Cool thing is that you don’t have to sharpen any of them often at all. Bad thing is that they’re expensive but y’a get what y’a pay for.

Re: You guys want to talk about survival knives?
I lived in the jungle for two years and used 3 knives constantly:

A short machete
A multi-tool knife
A medium-size butcher-skinning knife.

I'd be comfortable using different brands, but the general idea/use is what was important.

Built a house/hut with the first two and cut trails.

Skinned and cut up animals and root vegetables with the last.

Highly recommend all three.
