I've been searching for a Chinese response but not much luck. Since it's plastered all over MSM, my skeptical mind wonders what the actual purpose was.

Yeah. And I remember reading that the Ukrainian commanders didn't count over a 100K "missing in action", in those numbers.
With so much artillery, the chances of those missing being found are very slim.
