Strange that you mentioned "single." Has it ever been common protocol to take the bachelors first in our history? No doubt with todays dating climate more men are opting for bachelorhood over tieing the noose/knot with a modern day fem-beast. But I don't see these bachelors being easy to roundup, train and sent to fight for a society that hates them.  Yes it's hard to imagine. But as recently as Vietnam, and before that WW1, we had extremely unpopular wars and young men going unwillingly to the killing fields. Woodrow Wilson ran for reelection as president with the slogan "He kept us out of the war." Then right after his 2nd inauguration, he got us into the war and instituted a draft. Very few had any desire to fight that war.
