It doesn't make sense.
How can you force a person to kill people.
What if you tell them that you will commit suicide or kill your own people/soldiers if they hand you a gun?

I think in the case of this uncle it was due to his faith and he refused even a supportive role because he was so against all war, that led to his Imprisonment
