Quoting: Rev Woo-Woo I’ve always had a passion for learning how to do/make things from scratch. I don’t just want to know how to bake bread. I want to grind my own flour and grow my own grain. I don’t just want to sew, crochet and knit. I want grow, process and spin my own fiber and weave my own cloth. Use technology now, learn as much as you can of skills that have been (nearly) lost. BTW, has anyone watched any basket weaving tutorials? I want to learn that next! Three books I can recommend: Back To Basics - Reader’s Digest (original edition only): [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] The Forgotten Arts And Crafts by John Seymour: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] Self Sufficiency by John Seymour: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] These are older books from the 1970s, but are information-dense compared to most later books of this type. |

For grinding grain into flour, the best hand-powered mill out there, in terms of price versus performance, is the Country Living Grain Mill. There are of course electric mills available, and a Vitamix blender will also grind grain. The Country Living mill can be motorized, if desired. You can grow flax most anywhere, then process it and make linen. Funny that peasants centuries ago wore linen clothes, usually made locally in their village - better, sturdier material than what we wear today! |

Wouldn’t be fast but I could still grind! That Mockmill should serve you in good stead as long as there’s power. You could certainly make a mill with those stones, but even easier way is to get three long iron pipes, about 4 or 5 feet long, and bundle them together securely with heavy wire. Place a layer of grain in a large bucket, maybe an inch or so at a time, then lift and drop the ends of the bundled pipes into the grain. This will give you a somewhat-coarse grind. I saw this in a government nuclear war survival book years ago, and it does work. There is also the relatively-inexpensive Corona hand grain mill: [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] …that will do, again, a somewhat coarse grind, but they are popular and many people swear by them. |
