In my personal experience, a teepee lined with a condensation moisture proof interior will collect condensation for recycling much better than a dome structure, the domes will leak on you and not run off as well.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84339146

An inexpensive, as close as non-toxic as I have found for collecting condensation for repurposing is nontoxic greenhouse sheathing and fish safe pond tarps.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
Your fresh air intake must be much lower than your exhaust air exit. The rising heat will draw out the air and pull in the colder fresh air.

A longtime used proven effective correct teepee structure allows air to flow in through the base of the teepee and out through the top. An inner lining halfway up around the inside of the teepee keeps the lower cold air flow out of the main living area and allows the smoke, CO2 and excess condensation to escape out the top.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84339146

If you use mylar for the inner lining, it will hold in your body heat keeping your structure heated with 98deg F body heat in addition to ventilating your other cooking heat and lighting Sourses and reflecting back all your little bit of light like a wall of mirrors, you could even grow stuff like sprouts to eat, wheat grass to hand crank juice.

Keep your opening on the south side or south window, it will let in the sun light and shine it all over and warm it up even more.

Mylar is space and fire blanket reflective inexpensive lifesaving material, it reflects and deflects all your body heat back on to you or other heat from you, and it will reflect light for growing rooms depending on your purpose.

and all of the above, I like the 100ft x 6 ft rolls of double sided mylar I got for about $50 doing thrifty shopping.
It will deflect the heat in the summer heat waves of 105 F for weeks on end and reflect the body heat in the winter for in the barn and grow room and my bedroom and maintain the ground water temp in the pump house when it is below freezing.

Two weeks of 10 below 0, two years ago with the power out, snowed in and my well pump house pump did not freeze lined with mylar, and neither did the chickens and barn animals or go hungry or me sitting cozy by the wood stove with a hot pot of soup made from preserving my garden and livestock.

There were many times I have had to survive and grow up with nothing more than a shirt on my back and not more than a dime in my pocket, I am more prepared and experienced now in my older age.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
Currently it is 27 degrees with a dusting of snow outside. It's been raining and snowing off and on since last Friday and predicted to continue - a solid 2 weeks of rain and snow with temps below freezing at night.

We put the snow studded tires on at the beginning of last week in preparation for the upcoming snow and ice on the roads.

Even though we got the wood split.. we still need to stack it closer to the cabin. However, there is a small electric thermostat standing heater that keeps the cabins temp around 55 degrees. Works great!

There is a second vertical electric heater as back-up.

Wood stove is the most desirable when in the cabin but keeping the temp at a constant temp makes it more comfortable when coming into in at various times throughout the day.

Another item we got for our daughter was a hooded fleece robe she wears when since we haven't been using the heat in the house 90% of the time. With the recent snow the propane fireplace in the living room is used sparingly when the family is up.

Compartmentalize your house for zone heating.

Double socks and layered clothing.

Have some form of heating that doesn't require electricity.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
Older houses had lots of rooms. Now you know why "open concept" was so popular - no individual rooms to close off to heating or cooling.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73324455

Yes, I live in an old house with rooms and doors. We haven't remodeled to the open concept plan. I never much liked it because I think people need privacy.

There were more doors up at one point in this house than there are now. If I had the time and money, I would reinstall them.

We do save money by doing our own form of zone heating. We keep the furnace low (it's not on yet) and we have built-in heating/cooling units in two of the most-used rooms downstairs. So far, we have just had to turn on the units for the cold. (I know the thread is about doing without electricity, but this is related.)

We don't have central air conditioning.

In many places they made the regulations so strict you can’t put one in new construction.

Where I live in farming country you can burn off your weeds, brush, trash, and whatever, but the state comes down on you hard if you burn wood in a stove inside. This is really stupid since I’m a carpenter and have lots of scrap that I can burn outside in a fire ring but can’t put it in a stove to heat my workshop.

Liberal logic is an oxymoron.

And, oh my God! Don’t tell anyone you have a room for painting.
Smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

Lots of good ideas to keep warm when the power goes out...

What about your water pipes freezing???

Anyway to heat them without electricity. Otherwise, when the power comes on; you'd have frozen water pipes or even ruptured water pipes. Now your contending with a flood...

Clay pots might work, but there is a fire hazard...

Lots of good ideas in here.
Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.
