Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
If you purchase a wood stove, make sure you buy one that is a cook stove too, with burners on top. Many states have tight regulations on wood stoves, but even most of them are more favorable to wood stoves for cooking.
It's win-win any way you look at it, as you can cook and heat your home at the same time. If you do buy one, make sure you buy the cast iron pots and pans and the heavy duty utensils to use with them. You absolutely cannot use the regular kitchen pots, pans, or utensils, as they will melt from the heat. You can get the cast iron pots, pans, and utensils for cheap at many thrift stores.

Re: How To Keep House Warm Without Electricity: 15 Easy Tips
Have a wood burning stove installed if you own your own home, or if renting, your landlord allows it. I had my wood stove from my previous home installed in my new home a few months ago.
Also, a gel fuel fireplace can keep a good sized room warm during power outages.I have had one for over 30 years, and I have used it many times during power outages. Mine takes 3 gel fuel cans at a time, which is good for several hours of heat.
If you still have gas during a power outage, put big pots of water on the stove, and boil them. The heat and humidity generated by doing this, will help keep the house warm.

We'll use a dutch oven for stews and such. No wasting of propane.

I've used less than 15% out of my 500 gallon propane tank in the last year since we installed the stove. We were filling it twice a year. That would be about $1200 per fill up that I'm saving and I cut all my own wood.

You have to be careful because of the fire hazard, and to make sure the surface you put it on will not be damaged from the heat. There are some good y-tube vids on this.

I have heard that clay pots, the one's with the little hole in the bottom, put over a candle will heat up a room if you have a few of them.

Idiot.
A candle generates less heat than what leaks out through the walls.

The only way it works is if you use 2 or 3 hundred candles at least, maybe.

Actually you can use normal pots and pans on flat topped wood stoves.
You adjust the heat by placing steel trivets or grates under the pots to adjust the effective heat and you can position or shield any meltable handles with aluminum foil so they don't melt.
It's not rocket science, been doing it for over 30 years

I had it professionally installed by a licensed company. No problem. It was hooked up to the existing chimney, AFTER the existing chimney was totally redone, and a steel liner put in it.
FYI, this house was once heated with coal, but converted to a natural gas forced air. The furnace and new water heater are vented individually, directly to the outside. The chimney was just sitting there, unused, and needing repair. FTR, the wood burning stove will only be utilized in case of an emergency. Since I had every inch of this old brick house insulated, some new windows and all new doors, my energy bill has dropped 60%.

If your goal is only to not freeze, candles with some sort of heat diffuser will help as long as your house is insulated... depending on the size of space, 5 or 10 of them will make a noticeable difference.

You can use big cans of crisco... they will burn for weeks!

Here's some more. Love the long johns comment. We wear them here but sherpa tops and sherpa lined sweat/pants work great along with sherpa lined shoes and boots. Living in freezing temps 6 months out of the year I've tried EVERYTHING. Sherpa and polar fleece lined or flannel lined ski pants work the best.

BTW the house has the propane stove and the cabin has the wood stove. It's easier to keep a small space 12'x18' heated in winter than the house should be be without power for any prolong time. With the house we only heat the main room. Bedroom doors are closed. Electric mattress cover on the bed at night. Flannel sheets and night clothes... fleece robe, sherpa slippers.

A power outage can be inconvenient or if you are unprepared, it can be devastating. A long term grid down event will significantly change life…

From SusieQ59

"If you have a basement that is where you'd want to live if power grid goes down during winter.

Where your home can be whatever the temp is outside without heat...a basement stays at a steady temp no matter the temperature outside.

So clean up your basements now..organize and get ready to move down there for awhile.
A make shift home.

To stay warmer erect a tent down there.. big area rugs.. later you can always move a chair, couch , table and chair set. Freshing up your sleeping bags now..

If you have a bed topper on your mattress you can always remove it and put it in your tent and use underneath sleeping bags, blankets in basement.

If you don't have a basement use the warmest room in house. Where the sun hits all day.

During the day stay up stairs..open drapes and let the sun in..warm up the house, close blinds, drapes at night.

Make sure all drafts are sealed..and towels under doors.

Terracotta pots upside dow...rracotta pots upside down with a candle underneath can warm a small room. The clay pot absorbs heat.
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

Sure woods great. If you can get it.
Chances are you will pay more for wood than gas. Then you still got to cut it. Pile it. Move it load it watch it clean it & be there for it

Seems most of you don't live where it's cold.

Try burning 20 cords of wood. And running short.

Yeah pussy's don't know what winter is.

If your poor & cold. Dig a hole & burry yourself.

Humidity is your worst enemy in the cold. Cold damp will kill you faster than dry cold and humidity will damage your property and bread mold. You must stay dry, keep your bedding dry and remove layers of clothing to prevent sweating.
