Interesting but all of that work to save 5 bucks. There are better uses for your gardening time with a small garden.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83005788

That's for sure.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81228051

If you try backyard farming, raising beans isn't the only thing you will be doing.
You will be saving 5 bucks many times a day.

You will be gaining important lessons about how to do these things.

You will be working your soil/garden. (these things take time)

You will, step by small step, become more independent and resourceful.

Each time you walk in the door with something made from nothing... you will feel good about yourself.

You will be adding to the gross national product.

Think of the greenness of the lack of transportation needed, the lack of bad chemicals needed, the lack of packaging needed.

You won't be doing rotten things like playing computer games or larping on the internet

You will be getting nice fresh air, sunshine and exercise

You will be eating organic food

A lot of great food for thought here. hf I live in town atm with a small back yard. I work an extremely busy and stressful job which sent us home to work for about a year and a half during the china virus. So I started growing some stuff in containers during that time. I'm on my second year and have learned a ton. One huge lesson is that it can be a lot of work for not a lot of reward. The reward is in learning, for now. I can't wait until I have more room to till and grow in the ground.

I planted cheap supermarket green onions in some good soil because they started going bad. They became huge and I’ve gotten tons from them from the last two years.

Gonna plant peanuts…. ohyeah
 Quoting: 1r0n4n9el

Make sure you get the raw ones, and soak them at least a few hours, and they should grow.

I actually grow them out front as part of the landscaping because the foliage of peanut plants is so pretty.

Okra looks beautiful too out front.

I have a similar problem with a linden tree that was weak and fell in a storm, I had it cut to a stump and now am trying to regrow the stump, not to waste that huge root system that's still alive. Well it's grown for 2 years now and has multiple shoots 6 or 8 feet tall, definitely linden because of the leaves, but I have to treat them like vines because they never get more than a centimeter wide. I think the problem is that the new tree is supposed to widen out, and these are constricted at the base by the old dried wood of the stump.

Can a bag of supermarket pinto beans grow in a garden? Gardener Scott shows the results of planting generic beans from the store.

but are they GMO?

hmm
 Quoting: sseess

no, they are not GMO. They may be too old, and will have bad germination rate. Or, if you use something that is not a product of USA they may be irradiated. Everything else grows just fine

Cool idea. You can also start lots of vegetables from table scraps. Plant the end of a bunch of celery that you cut off and throw away. Plant the stub of a bunch of romaine or green onions, etc. I start mine in a glass of water first and plant in dirt when the roots appear.

Cabbage core and carrot tops as well.

Yep! My cockatoo loves them! We have an area of millet just for him too. He's a little bit spoiled.

Or you can spend another $3 and get 2 more bags to equal that return and eat them now, not months and months later

Its like those "plant your pineapple tops and grow a pineapple" video

I can spend $2.50 and just go buy another pineapple rather than wait 3 years for it to maybe grow into a new one

Somebody said, "so what he saved 5$". But to have 5$ to spend you must make like 7.50, right? And you have to put gas in your car to get there. And you have to dress up, and maybe be coerced to get a vax LOL. And you have to hire a babysitter. And deal with the office politics. Or you might have to deal with (gasp) the public.

Beans are taken for granted. Has anyone ever read the book "The Good Earth"? It's fiction. But in that book a family fights over a single bean. Because hunger can get that bad.

Trying to get nature to give you plants to eat *is* hard work. When people say it's a bad way to spend time, I get it. It can be heart breaking.

Grass WANTs to grow. So, expanding your back yard to grass farming (say, putting some animals on grass) is a great idea.

You will still want to have a garden though. The animals make the manure and the garden grows better.

You will want a cat to kill the rodents and birds so that you have some plants foods for yourself.

Isn't that the book where the Mandarin saying 'I'll eat yours, you eat mine" came into being about families swapping their children so they didn't have to 'eat their own'?
