Thanks for this thread, OP. I have 2 brothers in the same range and we're expecting 12-18 ft storm surge at my parents' house (thankfully they evacuated). Power was out before the eye wall hit land.

I'm so sorry to hear about your family. I also understand the challenges with having them evacuate. It's easy for people to be Monday Morning Quarterbacking the decision to stay or go. Sending best wishes for your family to be unharmed and minimal property damage! Please keep us posted on them! :)

Literally *all* of the worst of it, all of the dark red, passed entirely over their little slice of town.

Trying to balance dread and optimism.

I will say this: the storm took a hard-right turn and broke a little and it looks like the worst of it will be over for her area very soon...moving on to the yellow.

I really just can't guess what "The Worst" actually means or if the red is always the worst or the wind might not be where the red is...don't know.

Tampa should be spared compared to the Punta Gorda area .Good luck to them.

I'm a former Florida resident and the threat of hurricanes was one of the reasons that I left the state. I was there the summer they had 5 hurricanes back in the eary 2000s. One of the them was Cat. 4 Charlie. I was in the St. Pete area at the time and had to make a decision as to whether to leave or stay in St. Pete. They were still unsure the direction it would take. I opted to bail to Orlando and the storm ended up going there. Fortunately I made it to a shelter, but the metal roof was rattling from the 100 mph winds. The roof held though.

Thoughts and prayers to those of you there. If you are in a multi-story building it is probably safer to be on the lower levels unless of course incoming water makes that impossible.
Rooves flying off are not conducive to survival.

Communications with my friends in Naples is that this one is absolutely brutal.

You have to on the bad side of the eye within a few miles of the coast and then you can brag about surviving killer storms tough guy….flooding and tornadoes are what typically kill people and that can happen away from the eye of the storm.

If they die its because GOD wanted them to die I don't really see what the big deal is.

12-18 ft storm surges literally in her town which looking at the radar the reddest part of the fattest section of this whole thing literally dragged its entire length right through all of it.
