Just Popped A Tin Of Vintage Pipe Tobacco... | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 81750991 United Kingdom 09/28/2022 06:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, this thread may have limited appeal, but... Quoting: Outis 83935765 I smoked a pipe for many years, but got lazy and reverted to cigarettes. Have quite a few aged tins left, and happened upon a 100g tin of McClelland No.22 Virginia tinned in 1997, tin code 22 03 97. Tinned March 1997, batch 22. McClelland (the last remaining independent, non-corporatized pipe tobacco manufacturer in the US) ages a blend for 3-4 years before they tin it, so the crop year is probably 1993-4. Before I decided to pop it open, I looked at the prices similar McClelland tins of this age are going for, and I estimate this one could have been sold for $150-200 to an interested pipe tobacco connoisseur, but fuck it. Smoking it now in my best pipe, a Talamona Romana Billiard. It is heavenly, like a fine aged Bordeaux. Needed no drying right out of the tin, smokes clean, mild, no bite...absolutely incredible. Perhaps should have left it alone; who knows what someone might have paid in another ten years, but somehow, I just wanted to experience top-quality aged pipe tobacco again. Will be watching the hurricane coverage from the safety of Eastern Virginia, and thoroughly enjoying it. Bravo mate, i couldnt have give a shit about smoking pipes and tobacco but i might just try it now. I really enjoyed reading this post |

This is not the kind of pipe tobacco non-smokers generally like the smell of, though it is mild and inoffensive. Non-smokers tend to like the smell of aromatics (blends with added flavors, like cherry or vanilla). What do you recommend for a pipe tobacco that smells really good? Sutliff Creme Brulee or Molto Dolce (pretty similar) smell amazing... |

Sliced black twist XXX RM (rum) it's smells great and tastes good too. Absolutely divine on the retro-hale. The room note is nice so it's not bad to smoke in company. Can get a little bitey if you smoke it too fast. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 84004425 United Kingdom 09/28/2022 06:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was a heavy cigarette smoker and let me tell you if you smoke a pipe you can give yourself a good nicotine rush so your heads spinning especially if you smoke the stronger plugs and dark flakes. I've never had that kind of nicotine buzz off of ciggies, I get it regularly when I smoke twist or plug you would have to have a day off cigs and your first cig after a break wouldn't compare to the head swim off a pipe. But that's still not the point. So some of the benefits I no longer wake up with a mouth tasting like a stale ashtray. The tastes that you get from a pipe are so different than cigs and more flavourful with sour tangy flavours which change to a spicy flavour to name but a few. And that's without smoking anything flavoured. My chest is a 100 times better than on cigs And smoking then becomes a ritual not a robot like function. Take whatever points you want from my statement all of them are better than cigs |

I'd love to get a good nicotine rush again. I have some dark fired Kentucky and perique which are supposed to be heavy in the nic department. I also experimented with adding a pinch to aromatics to give them a bit more kick. My first step was to switch to RYO cigs. They're much cheaper and the tobacco is better, but they still never really taste "good". And it's a pain to have to roll them (injector) every week. Ideally pipes would become as you said, a daily ritual to enjoy rather than a quick addiction fix. I even have several cobs with that metal cover so I could have a few puffs on the go. |

Anything that states dark, rich dark or bold are usually good for a heavy nicotine blast sadly there hard to get a hold of in the UK I'm trying to source some rich dark flake but it is proving hard. I mix coniston cut plug and black twist that does the trick for me but either of them will give you a satisfying nicotine hit |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84270204 He also left some cool carved pipes in animal shapes like elephants and such that start out white then slowly turn color as you smoke out of them. Figured I’d try to get into it when I got a bit older, maybe take the edge of life off. some Meerschum pipes are literally invaluable. Not many, and it's been about 12-13 years since I looked at the market, but depending where and when stepdad got those, you might be looking at a new (non-EV if you have ANY sense) car in value. |

So op, what does leaving tobacco in a sealed tin do? Properly stored (as in not in a wet basement or hot attic) certain blends mellow, meld, develop, or even become more complex with age, like certain wines. The best type of pipe tobacco for aging a long time, like the 1997 McClelland that was the subject of this thread, are straight unflavored Virginias; that is just a strain of tobacco, many great Virginias are grown in Africa! I'm still smoking this stuff too. Didn't expect this thread to do so well, and it is good. Perhaps I'll cut down on the cigs and be mainly a pipe smoker again; lord knows I've got enough tobacco to last years even now. If I had saved every tin I bought years ago, I would have quite a valuable collection: tins like this one that I bought probably for $30 are going in the $150 range now, even tins not as old as this one. Do you pack it as tight as possible and then just start a small fire or what? I always felt like it either died quickly or I burned too much too quickly. I felt like I couldn't get it so I went back to cigs... Then I gave up cigs for juuls and then I gave up juuls for zyns. The pipe still has appeal to me I just couldn't figure out how to get the burn right. |
