152 years ago September, William Bitter disappeared into the 2nd Lake of Hell BENEATH the mighty Lake Superior...
A Mystery in true old time GLP fashion:

We natives had deep respect for the 40ft. waves, the thousands of ship wreaks with perfectly preserved bodies from hundreds of years ago...but nothing is more bizarre than the loss of life of Michael Bitter who, 152 years ago, dared to stand on the floor of Lake Superior and get sucked down as he broke through the roof of the gigantic chamber below that contained a second Lake below. He was pulled up with help and dared to go back again to find out what this was all about. He never came back.

In 2013, Another 3 man crew went down off of Duluth MN to try and spelunk down a granite wall and find out what was going on. After a severe run in with the "lake from Hell" and loss of two lives; and seeing the ageless corpse of william Bitter still preserved by the icy waters, still screaming in his copper helmut, the Professer finally escaped and got topside. The entire story is at

Id like to see a robotic camera go down to cave three, I believe this is part of the yellowstone system and Superior once was an active volcano.

I wonder how deep the second lake is and what kind of creatures it contains.

In the article, the second chamber was hunderds of feet deep(Superior is 1300 deep) and it goes on as far as they could see and then into another chamber below. That's why the lake has had so many depths up on land showing as the lake was flowing into the second Lake and the city capped it and stopped that with big boulders.

The professor lists all the life form. We know that there are to day, ancient 60 year old plus sturgeons weighing 2-300 lbs. and they go back for a million years in time none of the fish he saw had eyes and were all white. I remember my Dad getting 50lb lake trout out way in the middle of the lake in the 40s and it had only rudementary eyes it was down so deep OR did it perhaps go thru the ferrules or tunnels and up into Superior. Read that article it is great stuff.

I think this is some kind of fiction story, I was fascinated so I went looking for more info and all the stuff I can find links back to one story in the Duluth Post. If anyone has any better links to confirm if this is true post them here, this is absolutely amazing if real. Reminds me of the Fountains of the Deep from the Great Flood in Noah’s time.

Greetings. I believe the chamber of Commerce doesnt want this to be known, but there is a plaque on top of the boulders that plugged the hole. Also, we have centuries of interaction with so called mythical beings some who live in the lake and sleep under the lake in winter.(We lived a live where we followed our food so we didnt write alot of stuff down but relied on oral history"

We accept some as stories and others as just life up here. This system of lakes is like no other, like the one discovered in the south Pole. For instance, there is a swamp way inland that we would never build on and it "breathes" with Lake Superior. I think its called Gogiibik swamp, and when Superior is low, it is low etc.

The Dept of conservation also admits we have another lake equal to Lake Huron beneath the State, which is our source of fresh water.

cool story - I'd like to think things like this are real, but I know they most likely aren't.
I don't doubt the existence of huge underground lakes, and in some areas these underground water bodies must tie into other lakes.
Whether or not some guy got into it and saw these things - it's nice to think that maybe.....

I agree, I’d like to find some more info on this, can’t find shit on Google except stuff that all links back to that one essay in the Duluth Post which looks like fiction, the 2nd part where the guys go down again and find William Bitters body is definitely fiction.

There is a hidden cave system in that area though, there’s a waterfall near Duluth that splits in half and one half falls into a cave and no one knows where it goes, they’ve tried many times to find the outlet using dye and they never have, so basically half of a whole river disappears into a cave near Lake Superior and it’s a total mystery where it goes....
