Iran to purchase 21 Russian Su-35's, get advanced Russian radar | |

Despite the Kremlin’s claims of military and technical superiority, the Russian Air Force continues to face a big problem with its navigation systems. Russian military pilots are still actively using insecure, non-military navigation equipment due to the low quality of Russian own navigation systems. Russians have added off-the-shelf GPS systems, such as Garmin, to the cockpit of its combat aircraft. During the interrogation of a Russian pilot captured on June 18, it turned out that he had with him a Garmin navigator and a smartphone with the ‘Pronebo’ app in order to have more accurate navigation than the onboard navigation aids of the Russian Air Forces. Such GPS receivers have been found in wrecked downed Russian fighter bombers, attack aircraft, and even military helicopters. On top of that, Russia is taping basic GPS devices to its fighter jets. Wrecked Russian fighter jets are being found with rudimentary GPS receivers “taped to the dashboards” in Ukraine because their inbuilt navigation systems are so bad. [link to defence-blog.com (secure)] Sounds damned smart to me, the only way the US military can use GPS in the same area is if Russian can. You can change the frequency but not the functionality, you can scramble the signal from the positioning satellites, but it can be quickly decoded. Why not use it is it is there? A failure of Glonass position system or vice versa doesn't mean a total failure of global positioning ability. GPS signals can be easily spoofed. The US spoofs their own GPS signals in sensitive areas. SO if someone is using it to target a missile, it will go way off course and hit an open field. I assume this is how Iran captured the Obama Drone as well. Just tell it home is your own airfield. It will land right next to you. :) Most smart phones use both GLONASS and the US GPS system. China has their own as well that they are continuing to launch the satellites for. Newer smart phones will likely include that as well in the GPS functions.
