Scariest natural disaster you've ever been in?
I'll start.

First was an earthquake. It was on the eastcoast about 12 years ago. I was playing guitar hero with my younger brother and the floor started doing the wave. I was like "wtf?" And then it got stronger, and just, happened. Strong rumbling. I could barely walk I was so scared. I ran out the front door screaming and could hear other moms outside screaming for their kids. It was over as soon as it started.

Another time, I heard the weather sirens come on outside and announce a severe thunderstorm warning. Walked outside and looked up, because I've always LOVED thunderstorms, and I see a funnel cloud coming down over my house. I was screaming and crying to my mom "we're gonna die we're gonna die!!!" She was still inside, laughing at me because she thought I was lying and joking. She came outside to see it and had me come inside. All the other adults outside looking just kept saying how cool it was. No the hell it was NOT!!! ITS SUPER FUN to see on videos and the news, in person is another story.

That was probably the scariest for me. I mean, I've been in blizzards and hurricanes but those were okay. Tornadoes and earthquakes are terrifying.

I used to train dinosaurs for the circus until that outer space rock hit.

I haven't been scared of any of them. But the biggest was the Northridge Earthquake, I remember laughing when I saw a cop car driving on a freeway overpass and fall off when the cop didn't see a collapsed section.

Driving through the killer 2020 tornado in Nashville. Giant funnel cloud crossed the 40 right behind us. Ball lightning illuminating it. Wild.
Also, I almost got swept out to sea by a rogue wave while fishing on a huge rock in the 2011 Japan tsunami. No lie.

Same, Cameron LA was blowed up.

I got caught in a small freak tornado while turkey hunting. That made my taint tingle for sure, passed right over me.

Re: Scariest natural disaster you've ever been in?
A tornado hit my house when I was in it.

My mom smelled gas, so she made us all go outside to the neighbors (while the tornado was still raging!), and their house was gone. The person next to them lost their top floor. And another neighbor lost their garage. So we went to the 4th house down, the one that was least damaged, and about half the neighborhood was in there, because the tornado missed their house.

We were lucky, it just blew down our front doors and blew away our heavy lawn furniture. We never did find it.

1989 San Francisco area quake. I was downtown, Tenderloin. Sat on the roof and watched the city on fire that night (Marina district). No power, water or phone for at least 2 to 3 days. Only news was via radio. Trippy experience!

Me too! Loma Prieta. I was leaving work in San Jose walking down a one story stairwell when it hit. It dropped me to my rear end, and i was gripping the railing and actually said…. “It’s the big one!” Once settled my friend from work and I walked out to see a heck of a mess!! Memories hfFor

Been scared of being hit by tornados numerous times. In 2010, saw a funnel half way to the ground while driving, which everyone here knows that means it's actually on the ground. I hauled ass the other direction and missed it. Found out later it damaged a school that was right where I saw it, and then went up and took out the truck stop a few miles east. Probably the scariest moment of my life. hiding

We were the only ones in our apartment building with a battery powered radio (and fresh batteries), candles and bottled water. Shared with all. It was weird when it hit, I thought it was the big one as well and everything seemed to be in slow motion.

Re: Scariest natural disaster you've ever been in?
Very similar to your experiences OP. Was living in West LA I am from the Midwest. Northridge Quake....hit in middle night early morning, while apartment comes rocking back and forth felt like a house of cards that could collapse. Helpless feeling. Had only bn living in LA for a few years.

Back in Oklahoma from SoCal after 30 years. 1st year back had to drive to pic up friend coming into Tulsa Airport form CA to visit. Line of Severe thundstorms that day, many spin up. Hit aby a F1 in my truck driving on the highway. Luckily was open field are by a big park, no debris, the rain the hail then the wind, so powerful, have never paid so fast for 60 + seconds holding onto my steering wheel just getting backed by powerful winds hoping my truck was not swept away with me in it. It was traumatic experience. I watch Ryan Hall during the spring, if forecast is for badness, I'm in the cellar ✌

Hurricane Hugo. 8 tall pines landed on the house. I was pregnant. 30 trees in all were down in the yard. No electricity for 5 weeks. Took months to clean up.

Then Hurricane Andrew hit my parents house. Warzone.

The scariest... a tornado

The weirdest... an electromagnetic storm... My life and my consciousness has never been the same since then
