Where I am now. Rural n.e. Alabama..no nuke plant nearby, no military bases, not too cold to where I'd freeze to death without the power on, and I live on 55 acres...with a creek, woods, and a mountain...I knew this was coming..I moved down here six years ago from a large northern City.

Anyplace not downwind from a target. I have heard Maine and Oregon are two places that might be safer. It won't matter though, fallout will blanket the Northern Hemisphere. The best chance for survival is to go as far into the southern hemisphere as possible. Argentina or Chile possibly.

Rural, of course, probably mostly in the northern center of the US, dakota's a sliver of MN, wyoming, idaho and montana.

Somewhere away from major US cities. Away from military bases. Away from nuclear missle silos. Away from centers of governments. Take a map, draw a two hundred mile radius from each of the items I listed above. Live where the circles do not intersect, or down wind from any circle.

Also, remember, nukes are sent across oceans via missles. After watchin Musk's rockets explode just after lift off are you confident that the guys running the missles can actually get 100% of those missles to hit their exact aim point? I don't which means living outside the circles I described above is still a crap shoot.

Live away from the coasts, away from civilization, but near water and good crop growing lands. If you are nowhere near there, then its too late for you.
