Then a month later, it was December 31, and that was the first time I stayed up 'til midnight. I had a major conniption fit when I realized 1963 was over and gone forever, because 1963 had been the best year ever. They listed several reasons to convince me that 1963 had NOT been all that great a year, and the ass word was part of it. Assassinations aren't acceptable, even when they're Democrats. I was "helping" my mom fold towels and wash cloths. The news came on showing reporters and saying the President had been shot. My mom gasped and the tv stayed on for many hours, something that never happened in our home. Later I remember Cronkite said the President was dead. My mom cried and my dad put his head down. For one do young, I remember the whole thing very well, like it was seared into my very young mind. I also remember the funeral train though I don't know if that was John's or Bobby's.
