Recent threats by Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah to attack Israel’s Karish offshore gas platform in the Mediterranean — if Israel starts extracting gas before reaching an agreement with Lebanon on maritime borders — remind us that a monster has emerged to Israel’s north.

Hezbollah’s force build-up includes some 150,000 projectiles, and the terror organization could fire thousands of them at Israel per day. It is no secret that Hezbollah poses a strategic threat to Israel. It is armed with between 500 to 700 precision-guided missiles, and the combination of these two capabilities can undoubtedly bring the State of Israel to a halt.

This raises questions about the extent of Hezbollah’s ability to influence Israeli decision-making at the Karish gas platform. Would Israel proceed with extracting gas in its economic waters in the absence of an agreement?

The combination of Hezbollah’s offensive capabilities and the increasingly aggressive tone of its leadership raises a key question: Is Israel obligated to sit and wait to be attacked?

The only time Israel conducted a clear preemptive strike and took the initiative at the strategic level (not including small-scale tactical operations in Gaza) was at the start of the 1967 Six-Day War.

Chances of Hezbollah War ‘Still Remain Very High’: US Envoy

Former US assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker told i24NEWS that the chances of an Israeli-Hezbollah confrontation “still remain very high” despite the advancement of a US-brokered maritime border agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

The proposal “does nothing to lower or alleviate tensions along the blue line where Hezbollah is digging in,” Schenker said in an interview with i24NEWS senior US political correspondent Mike Wagenheim that aired Tuesday.

Schenker said that it appeared that Israel agreed to give the Lebanese “100 percent” of what they wanted, while pointing out that the Qana gas field that would be under control of Lebanon contains “very little reserves.”

Lebanese authorities have crucial reservations about several key points of a US-brokered proposal to solve a maritime border dispute with Israel, Lebanese media reported on Tuesday.

Citing unnamed government officials, the pro-Hezbollah daily Al-Akhbar reported that Beirut did not agree to recognize Israel’s buoy-marked boundary — which Jerusalem unilaterally placed five kilometers off of the coast of the northern town of Rosh Hanikra in 2000 — as an international border.

The report claims Israel’s northern neighbor is also against the idea of demarcating a land border as part of the agreement, and insists that the issue must instead be reserved for discussions with the United Nations.

Israel readies for war with Hezbollah after Lebanon ups maritime deal demands

Israel is preparing for a possible confrontation with Hezbollah after rejecting increased demands from Lebanon in maritime border talks on Thursday.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz instructed the defense establishment “to prepare for any scenario in which tensions increase in the northern arena – including defense and offense readiness,” his office said.

Testing of gas pipeline set to start at Karish drilling site amid Hezbollah threats.

Defense minister warns of ‘resolute’ response to any attack as proposed maritime deal flounders; ‘And if things develop into a broader conflict, we will take Lebanon apart’

Gas drilling company Energean is set to start testing the pipeline of the Karish gas rig, according to Saturday reports on Israeli television, despite heightened tensions with Lebanon over the site as the sides continue to struggle to reach a maritime border deal.

Channel 12 reported that Israel’s security establishment has given the company the green light to start its tests. Kan news reported that these could begin as soon as Sunday. Full operations could begin within weeks once tests are completed.

The Karish gas field has been at the center of the conflict with Lebanon over gas drilling rights, with terrorist group Hezbollah repeatedly warning it could attack if gas extraction begins without an agreement being reached over drilling rights.
