I worked for W.S. Shamban in the 1980s, we produced teflon
seals. Teflon is actually a pretty dangerous substance
because it's fluorine bound to carbon, extremely strong
chemical bonds, which means they're aren't attracted
to anything else. That's why nothing sticks to Teflon.

Fluorine gas is *highly* reactive, it can kill you.

So I worked in the production of the seals, with lithium
and teflon, etc. We always kept the lithium in either
an oil bath or ether, so it couldn't react with air.

One day my new supervisor, who knew nothing about chemicals
(I was a CE major), disregarded the safety protocols because
he didn't want to wear gloves. So he got some teflon
powder on his hands, which got on his cigarette, which
was hot enough to vaporize the teflon into its base
components, and he got a dose of fluorine gas.

And that was it. He got sicker than shit within an hour,
ambulance came and take him away. Never came back. He
didn't die but he was done with the job.

Back in 2009 or so, this guy I was acquainted with (we had briefly played in a band together) used my name to get hired as a HS chemistry teacher. (I did not recommend him, didn't know he used my name to get in)


First week of school, numbnuts tried to do an experiment, started a FIRE and got the entire school evacuated, fire department came, the entire school was outside for like 2 hours.

After that all these people kept asking me about that guy... "Hey I heard you are friends with the chemistry teacher that set the lab room on fire."

At Sevenoaks School, a private school in England, we had one chemistry teacher who was an idiot. In the mid-1970's he took his class to the small, open air, inground, concrete swimming pool that we then had beside the administration block. Here, he took a huge ball of either Sodium, Lithium or POtassium (I don't remember) the size of a football in a huge bell jar and threw it in in front of the class. The explosion blew out all the windows in the administration block, knocked most of the class over and drenched them. The school had to pay for new uniforms for all of them. Worse however, the impact was so great that it cracked the concrete of the swimming pool right across so it had to be drained and written off.

A defective lithium battery doesn't need to be lit up, it will just blow up on it's own.

I've accidenally soaked myself in gasoline before and nothing happened to me. I took a shower and that was that. Now if lithium battery leaked on me, I wouldn't be typing this rihght now.
