Anonymous Coward User ID: 29706669 United States 10/11/2022 05:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Two hundred years ago our forefather didn't need no stinking water filter. They drank from a pail left in the rain, a stream, a creek, a river, a pond or from a shallow well they dug themselves. If they got sick they either died or they survived. Pretty simple to figure out how they faired by seeing that you are on this rock along with seven billion other folks. Fear porn is pretty prevelant, yet if we all go back to what our forefathers did to survive I bet a lot of us will. Case in point, if you are a big prepper and have the choice between a cattle pond or a berkey water filter and you know the berkey didn't pass the EPA standards for filter water AND your berkey sprung a leak, would you then start drinking from the cattle pond? After a week I bet you would. |

I have one put away for SHTF plus extra filters..in case I need to use our creek water. Buy the original at their website only |

Quoting: Just Passing Through..... My water is pretty fucking good. Yeah it’s clean, but it’s dead water. All minerals striped Well, its pretty damn hard to drink "living water". Even clean spring water where I'm at here in Florida is inundated with chemicals. Thats why we have so much red tide. So I do the best I can by making sure I have the best "dead" water I can afford for my wofe and children. Anonymous Coward User ID: 80596720 United States 10/11/2022 05:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have never had mine tested, but my black elements are coming up on 5yrs old and they are still removing the chlorine from the municipal water. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72497887 Water from my faucet smells like a swimming pool, and water from my Berkey has zero chlorine odor/taste. Thanks for posting this OP. As an owner of 2 Berkey purifiers for 10yrs I would really like to see test results from multiple labs. Yeah my tap water smelled like effluent (recycled waste water), and I have used Berkley for six years, cleaning it and replacing filters yearly. Whatever dudes, at least I'm trying something, as I recognize we need CLEAN water and air. Just do the best you can, good luck! |

Quoting: JustmeTX 2 big pre-filters, then a big carbon filter, then the R/O membrane, then a final Carbon filter to finish off. Not much gets through that setup. For portable filtration / disinfection. The gold standard has always been Katadyn filters. Either the pump type or the gravity drain type which is my preference. Hard to beat the simplicity of filling a bag with water and hanging up for a while to refill a container. I have the old unit called "katadyn base camp" I see the similar product now is called "Be-free". As long as they provide lab tests to certify it, and it has at least 0.2 micron filtration. If you want added safety, adding iodine to the water is a needed nutrient anyway and will disinfect the water if you dose it correctly and leave it sit for 20 minutes to kill any microbes. This is all assuming you have water from a questionable stream or pond source, but that there is not oil or kerosene or pesticides in the water. The sub micron filtration is to remove the normal pathogens found in water. Berkey was a known rip-off for years on another website I used to frequent. They never provided lab data. Just lots of advertising to lure the buyers that did not do their homework. Like most things, it is cheaper to hire shills than to actually be good. There is also a cheap ceramic filter that still gives the 0.2 micron filtration, but you need to supply your own set of 5 gallong buckets. It was marketed very cheaply to help people in Africa filter out the Onch worms that gave them river blindness. They used to sell for under $15. You need to check or test such filters to make sure they are not cracked. A still tends to not have the multiple theoretical stages needed for a decent separation, and they consume a lot of power. You would need to look into the details. I don't have one, but I have spent a career designing and operation distillation plants. What you buy commerically as a water still is likely just a flash evaporator/condenser. It might remove stuff, it might not. the energy consumption would make it a non-contender for a grid down situation. JustMeTX, I'm venturing out to ask a 'Are you fn kidding me?' water filtration question, but I have to do it. Now, first, sit down. Ok. What is the best filter or set up for filtering Houston bayou water? But wait, there's more... Bayou water that's running close to industrial plants and the ship channel? Simms Bayou. I wanted to share this while you still have time to grab an alternative. Quoting: ifSHTF These were pushed quite a bit throughout the Prepping community, but it almost sounds like this company may have taken advantage of many consumers, given the videos below. These are not my videos, nor do I know this guy, but it is starting to go around with various other Youtubers who also had water tested. Video 1 - Summary - Berkey Falsified the testing information. The filters seem to not filter the claimed contaminants, nor are they doing so to the stated ratings. When asked for test results, they replied with "estimated" results. Video 2 - Summary - There is an ongoing class action lawsuit against Berkey. Water was sent in for 3rd party testing for NSF Std 53, and the Berkey failed horribly. Apparently, there seems to be a class action going. Lawsuit Link: h t t p s ://nopeorg/embed/berkey-lawsuit-court-documents_202210 I have used a British Berkfield/Royal Daulton ceramic system for years. Have never changed the filters, just boiled them them to remove chlorine from the activated charcoal. They still work perfectly. Would not have a Black Berkey, never trusted the design.
