So my mailbox is right after a curve that's a 55 mpg zone. That mailbox has been clipped five times in 30 years.

We have that problem around here too.


A 6x6 with a 1/4 inch steel sleeve around it, buried in concrete will fuck a newer car up real good. I've seen it happen.

Snowplows take mine out every year or two.

My dad did that. Steel pipe inside a bigger steel pipe set in concrete. When it got hit, there were pieces of that car all the way down the street. Woke the whole neighborhood up.

I built a killer mailbox. The box itself weighed 30# and I screwed it to a steel plate welded to a water pipe flange and a piece of water pipe which set inside a galvanized fence pipe set into concrete. I designed it so it could spin if hit.

I came home one day and the fence pipe was wrapped around itself like a twizzle stick and the mailbox was just.. gone. I went up and down the road looking for it. Neighbor said it made a helluva noise when it was hit.

Ever since then, fuck it. 4x4 post and a $12 plastic box.

I did move the post back away from the road as much as possible and that has reduced the hits by a lot. They have to be fully in the ditch to get to it and they're going airborne due to the culvert if they do.

Best one I ever saw was somebody took one of those oversized post hole digger drills, you know the size that the utility company mounts on it's trucks to drill holes for phone poles and electric poles.

Person found one somewhere and put in about a 4' footer and put that drill into solid concrete with the mailbox on top. ... oh and he painted that sucker in reflective paint

After he did that his mailbox didn't get hit again at least while I was around, though it had been taken out a few times before that, so it must have worked for awhile.

North of the Airbase, the young good old boys like to drink a few beers and play mailbox baseball. Some sunday mornings, every mailbox around would be knocked off, beat up or laying in the ditch. Except for a few. Those were the guys that had two mailboxes, a large one on the outside and a smaller one inside. The distance from the little box to the larger box was filled with Concrete. After hitting those boxes with their bats while doing 25 or so, they quickly learned to leave those the fuck alone.

How?
If the mail truck has a chance of getting struck, they will have you place it deeper in to provide a safe place for the truck to pull off.

I would ask the mailman if he wants it close to the house or something different
