Is .308 round preferred?

Shooting a couple of rounds indoors from a shorter barrel tactical semi auto 308 will probably leave you with permanent hearing damage.

A 5.56 is fine, I've shot deer with it and had them drop in their tracks.

Maybe not best for normal home defense(Get a 12 ga shotgun)
but for a hunting and all around battle rifle its a very good choice for a number of reasons.

My choice is the 6.5 Grendel cartridge, right between the 5.56 and 308 diameter and power, 25 rounds fit in an AR-15 30 round mag, and if you're not into AR's, there's a few bolt action rifles to choose from.

It would not be my choice for home defense, but .308 is a very useful caliber.

5.56 is a near perfect low recoil personal defense cartridge in a semi auto rifle.

The only problem with the grendel is ammo availability. I have one and it's great, but I've never seen ammo in a store and even online a ways back it was tough... I had to roll my own.

If you could only buy 1 gun for defense, SHTF and hunting, .308 would be a better choice because it works in all those scenarios. If quantity of guns is not a problem then for personal defense a short M4 carbine 5.56 is a better go to. It's light, low recoil and even the ladies can competently handle it. Ammo is much cheaper in 5.56 than .308 and there seem to be less shortages in 5.56 in general. I hunt with an AR-10 but I also have an M4 carbine for zombieland. I prefer a 12ga for home defense.

High powered rifles are not really good for home defense. Both a 5.56 and .308 will go through many many walls before stopping. For home defense, a 12 gauge shotgun is the best option.

That being said, as a rifle round, you really cannot go wrong with a .308. Is there more recoil? Slightly more in an AR10 configuration.

Home defence is a close quarters 12 guage shotgun, if you don't want to kill your damn neighbors by accident while defending your home. A hand gun using hollow points is next in line, but even those can go through walls and hit innocent bystanders, good old OO buck shot is the safest option when compared to the rest, and why this isn't taught as home defense 101 boggles the mind.

I agree .308 seems to be the "do everything" caliber. Might be good to have one

5.56/.223 is a way more common caliber, it would be easier to find both ammo and spare parts.

if the shit hits the fan. a sawed off 12 gage will not miss at close range for protection. add a handfull of finishing nails in the barrel for extra kick to send a statement to future breechers of your hacienda.

That's why I keep snake shot in the 44 unless if I feel I have to go bigger that's just an arm reach way also,

5.56 all day every day. Match the ammo, plenty of choices.
